I am IBS-c with severe trapped gas and bloating that lasts for hours and I can not sleep at night without ambien. I have tried the ibs diet,gluten-free diet, low carb diet, specific carb diet, zelnorm, yoga, gas-x, laxatives, fennel tea, peppermint, probiotics, bentyl, levsin, etc. I have been worked-up for celiac disease and had a negative colonoscopy. I am desperate! I can not live like this. Any other suggestions? TIA

A soluble fibre supplement. Perhaps the most important thing when it comes to IBS. Since you have gas issues, you need to be really careful. Try acacia, benefiber, equalactin, citrucel. Start in VERY small doses and increase VERY slowly or you will only get even more bloating and gas. Don't buy a big bottle at first. Try a small one and see how you do. Give it a good 2 weeks. Sometimes, it takes a while to get on the right one. I prefer acacia.

Also, being lightly active after eating is helpful.\
Have you tried the gas relieving pose in yoga? Lie on your back and bring one knee to your abdomen. Wrap your hands gently around the outside of your knee. Hold for 20 seconds. Try the other side. I find this will often dislodge trapped gas and move it somewhere else. Often, I get a fart within a minute or two. Ahhhh.

Oh, and TONS and TONS of water. I hope this helps. I'm so sorry you're having so much trouble. If you would like, you could give me an example of the types of foods you're eating, and I could see if there's something in there that could be a culprit.

Thank you for responding. I have tried that yoga position and sometimes it works but lately it hasn't. I will try the soluble fiber. Right now I am eating eggs, organic turkey hotdogs, wellshire farm chicken apple sausages, oranges, strawberries, squash, and green tea. I just took a few doses of zelnorm to give it another shot but I think it made me worse. Thanks again.

First off, note that egg yolks are an IBS trigger, so you might want to stick with whites only for a while.

The three keys to IBS-C that have helped me are: SF and IF at every meal, drinking peppermint & fennel tea all day long, and exercising every day. Yeah, a lot of it appears to be a consistency thing - if I stop drinking tea in the evening, I'll get bloated and gassy.

Of course, everyone is different. And I should mention that the hypno program helped me hugely with cramping and bloating!

Totally! Session 3 really helped me learn how to relax away my particular style of cramps, and when I'm not cramped up, I'm not so bloaty. And I cramp under stress, and learning how to relax in the face of cramps/stress instead of panicking and cramping even more as a result was a huge help.

Beth, I just saw this. I can't believe you haven't tried hypno yet, with all your suffering. I'm telling you, I'm the most cynical person, not a huge fan of alternative therapy, but hypno really worked for me. I think it made the biggest difference out of anything. It made me feel so much more in control of my body and the stress that contributes to my symptoms. I really urge you to try it. I know that you get very anxious about whether or not you are doing the right things for ibs, and we all know the anxiety doesn't help much! I've had a huge reduction in my anxiety since using the program, and I didn't even finish the 100 days. I got interrupted when I moved and went on vacation a year ago, and haven't resumed since -- but the effects are lasting. I'd be willing to lend you mine, if it's the money you're worried about. Please give it some thought.

I don't have a CD player that is programmable...and money is so tight. I have read some wonderful things about the program, though.

Wow!!! I cannot figure out any food intolerances...just constant pain and symptoms. Me thinks my mind needs some attention because the food identification has been fruitless....and very anxiety producing! Yep, I do get very anxious about whether I'm really doing the diet correctly....or what I'm consuming that is not good for me, but I can't figure it out.

I guess, by now, the secret is out! Yes, I have food and IBS anxiety big time!!!!!!!

You can play them on your computer if you have any sort of music application (real audio, windows media player, etc) and speakers. You can put the CD in, then edit your playlist so that only one track will be played, and make sure it's not on repeat. That's what I usually do.

I don't have a programmable CD player either, and I was able to do the whole 100 days. Since there are only 2 sessions per CD, you only have to worry about the first session:

CD 1: The first track is the introduction, which doesn't have you doing any sort of relaxation outside of getting comfortable. I didn't have any problem being awake enough to turn it off.

CD 2: Session 2 is the first track. You are doing hypno at that point, but there's a lot going on in that session and I've always woken up just when he tells you to.

CD 3: Session 4 is the first track. I must admit that I did snooze a few minutes into Session 5, but I appear to have survived it unscathed.

Beth, just start the program. You don't need a programmable CD player, it's just a help. Even if you don't do it perfectly, I think it will make you feel better.

As long as you know the length of each track, you could set your alarm clock to go off a minute or two after the track is supposed to end, just in case you don't wake up to turn it off. I've done that as well. I'm telling you, it's so worth it.

Beth,

This could possibly help you. Say Thank You and pay it forward one day!

I did hypno for the last 100 days of my pregnancy. The day I gave birth to my son, I was symptom-free for about 7.5 months. Don't know if it was hormone related or hypno related, but I'm sure that both contributed.

One of the things the program addresses is how people who struggle with IBS for a long time can actually start throwing roadblocks in front of themselves (often subsconsciously) to keep their bodies in the same pattern. I think it's a way people keep themselves from trying something new that might fail, thus leading to more disappointment.

But - at this point there is literally not one single reason for you to not accept the program as a gift, and do it. I've read through all the posts on this thread, and from an objective point of view all of the reasons given for why you haven't done or can't do the program come across as excuses. I think you're so beat down by IBS at this point that you're almost afraid to try yet one more thing - because what if it doesn't work?

Please accept the program you've been offered as a gift, and take a chance. The odds are so truly great that it WILL help, and you will not be disappointed. And the program will directly help stop the unconscious pattern of thought and behavior so that your body can change itself, and start functioning normally. It IS a change - and to me it actually sounds like you are fighting any change at all. But this would be a change for the better.

Please take a chance and just do it.

That's your pride talking, sunshine. Humility is key. And anyway it's just a loan! I'll lend you the CDs, I'm sure someone here will lend you a programmable CD player, though I'm certain it's not necessary (as I said, you can just set a timer to wake you up). Think about it, pray about it, whatever. In the meantime I need your mailing address!

about this "programmable CD player" business. I did the hypno CDs but didn't program my CD player. I just pressed play and went at it. I always woke up when the session ended, and turned off my CD player then. I think maybe once or twice I awoke with a start just as the following session was beginning. I guess I just took a risk. But Beth, I encourage you to accept the support everyone's giving you and give the CDs a try!

There is never "no hope". I went to Mayo Clinic back in March -- people had been urging me for months and months to go there, but I resisted because I'd been struggling for so long that Mayo seemed a sort of last-gasp thing -- and if Mayo didn't work, what then? then there'd be nothing left.

Well, I went to Mayo Clinic, and guess what, so far I haven't been helped at all (as far as my endometriosis problems go). In fact, thanks to their RE, I feel way worse than I did before. But contrary to what I expected, I don't feel like I've lost all hope. Okay, so maybe I am not exactly Little Miss Sunshine all the time, but as long as I'm breathing, there's a chance I'll figure out how to make myself feel better, and THAT is enough to keep me going.

But. Be honest with yourself. Have you REALLY tried everything? I mean, really honestly given it a more-than-fair trial? Maybe some of the options can be scary, or maybe you resist the idea that it can be helpful. I know you've been on Heather's diet a long time, but there are a lot of other contributing factors. I used to have horrible D all the time, and I remember how quickly I gave up on new ideas when it didn't seem to be helping. I have no idea what you've tried and haven't tried, and you don't have to tell me -- but think it over and consider what you can really truly rule out as being helpful. So maybe X didn't seem to be helping, but maybe you were taking Y and Z that negated the effects of X? I would be trying a new probiotic and a new fiber supplement and more protein and a calcium supplement all at once, and I would continue to feel like garbage -- or feel like an entire dumpster full of garbage -- and so I would give up on all of it.

Don't forget, too, that people ARE coming out with new treatments all the time. There will always be the hope that progress will be made.

You need to try the hypno. Maybe it's scary, but if you spend your whole life trying to be "safe", odds are you won't be happy. Do not look at it as your "last hope". It isn't, and even if it was, the fact that it IS hope should be enough to try it.

Please, please try the hypno. You owe it to yourself to do your best to get better.

I agree with all the great advice you've been getting. Yes! Please try the hypno! On a lot of your posts, you do come across as being very anxious and being too cautious. I think the hypno CDs would help you break those negative thought patterns. You know I've had to deal with my own anxiety issues as well, so I see some similarity between us. Right now, try the hypno CDs and don't worry about the possiblity that they may not work.

*hugs!*

everyone here really is amazing!

and I agree with what heather and some people are saying about the subconscious mind. If you think there is no hope, then there will be no hope because you make it that way.. however, if you think positively things usually turn out in a positive way (granted, I know this is always the case, but more often than not its true) For example.. if you think you're going to get sick.. then chances are you're going to get sick. If I go out at night and hem and haw about getting an attack.. I usually get one. If I go out and think.. nope.. not tonight.. I'm going to have to much fun to worry about ibs, and you know what.. i'm almost always fine!
