Hi I was recently diagnosed with IBS and started having symptoms about 18months ago. I do not have alot of pain etc
but just stay constipated. I have changed my diet and ordered Heather's books but what can I do right now to empty
my bowl and keep going until I get the books and the diet can kick in. Please Help. Thank you.

This is definitely a question for Heather. I can only encourage you that you are in the right place, and we all support each other here. Please read carefully the FAQ and dietary guidelines attached to this diet board. It will give you a few pointers. A good starting point is rice, pasta, potatoes, french bread and oatmeal. Take care and let us know how you're doing.

I just posted this on another thread, but since I am IBS-d and you are IBS-c, I don't know if it applies to you! I ate nothing but chicken and rice for a week prior to starting Heather's diet, and it worked wonders for me. (I read to do that somewhere, but I don't remember where! It was two years ago!) I also don't drink anything but water, which helps, but the juice suggestion isn't a bad one...I just don't like juice.

Hi, I'm new to this, being on a board that is, but I find ginger root tea (sliced fresh ginger and hot water) helps a lot as does peppermint tea. Good luck.

This is a good place to start - http://www.eatingforibs.com/faq.htm

You'll see the "break the cycle" link second from the top. Constipation takes longer to resolve than diarrhea - up to two weeks, so have faith. Try to drink as much water or herbal teas as possible and be as active as possible - this will really help.

Please let us know how things go and if you have any other questions.

Best,
Heather

Pay close attention to Heather's suggestion of drinking lots of water. I was on the diet for a couple weeks without relief to my constipation. I thought I was already drinking plenty of water, so I didn't think twice about it. The soluble fiber just seemed to fill me fuller and fuller until I drank enough water to make it into a gel in my colon. I hope this information is correct. This is how it seems to me anyway. Good luck and don't get discouraged. There are so many tips and recommendations that it is impossible to incorporate them all right away. You will find what works for you, though.
