Hi! I've just started the IBS diet and am startind to feel a lot better ( ) but i have one question. Is red meat and dairy something you should cut out perminantly (as in never eat it again) or can you gradually add it back in? Will your body re-adjust to these foods once the symptoms have been under control for a while? Thanks!

Glad you are feeling better and that you found this board. It's most helpful!! I think you may get varied answers to your question. Mine is that it is unlikely that you will be able to add red meat and dairy back in to your diet. Some people can "cheat" and eat some trigger food occasionally and do okay. Personally, I can eat lean red meats with no problem, but I NEVER touch dairy - it kills me everytime. Well, almost..I can eat yogurt (including frozen!) without any problem most of the time. I have heard of people working their way out of IBS with yoga, meditation, hypnosis, etc. stress-relieving methods. I have done Mike Maloney's hypnosis recordings for IBS and found them very helpful. But this did not eliminate the IBS, just made it more manageable. I can eat more than I used to of some foods. I definitely can "cheat" during low stress times more than high stress. I would definitely caution that while you are getting your system calmed down with the IBS diet, you stick with it closely. Try not to eat trigger foods at all until you've been stable for a few months. Best wishes for continued improvement!!

Hi, and welcome! I'd second Andie, that as IBS is a lifelong problem you'll probably have to keep the biggest trigger foods (and those are almost universally red meat and dairy) out of your diet. You may be able to cheat with small amounts, once you're really stable...or you may not. Meat and dairy are problems for several reasons - they're not just high fat, but their proteins are really difficult to digest, plus dairy has lactose. They're also foods with zero soluble fiber, so there's nothing helpful about them to help balance out the harm they can do IBS.

So....hope for the best here, but in the meantime try and treat yourself to foods you love that won't hurt you.
