I posted this in the LR, but since most of know Bob from the Eating Board, I thought I'd post it here as well.

I just received an email from a friend of Bob. Bob wanted me to let you all know that he has suffered a stroke and is in the Hospital. He does expect to fully recover, although right now the left side of his body does not work very well. Bob wanted me to tell you that his stroke came immediately after a bowel movement. He stood up and collapsed.

He also wanted me to let everyone know that he is in Room 815 of Marquette General Hospital. For those who would like to call, the MGH number is 1-800-562-9753. For those who would like to send a card, the address is 580 W. College,
Marquette, MI, 49855.

I have not spoken with him myself yet. He asked his friend to email me so that I could let all of you know what has happened and why he hasn't been around.

My prayers go to Bob. He is a nice man who has offered so much to the Eating Board.

Thanks

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Hi all,
I received another email from Bob's friend. I'll copy and paste for all who want to read:

"Beth,
I just spoke to Bob on the phone. His re-hab is ongoing, and he says he might be there "a week or two." It's tough for him with only limited to no use of one arm and one leg, but he's pulling through. I'm happy to say that his voice soundd stronger than the last time I talked to him. He
has been moved to Room 381 of MGH in case anyone wishes to call him. I've passed along the word that many are pulling for him".

They still don't know what caused the stroke.

Here's a copy/paste of the email I got from Bob.

Hi Beth, I'm emailing you from the hospital rehab computer. I'm not doing too bad now. I'm learning how to walk again, and trying to get the motor functions of my left arm and hand back. I saw one my GI doc's associates last saturday and he told me to significantly take down my fiber intake
and just use Miralax. He said because I have a lot of 'perineal descent', the fiber wouldn't really do me any good. He didn't explain why in detail, but it seems to be working! My rehab doc thinks my stroke was definitely
a result of the ibs because of my dancing routine to generate the BM's and straining which was sending my blood pressure sky high. I'm lucky I didn't blow the top of my head off. So much for ibs not being life threatening, I just *proved* otherwise! Tell everybody thanks for their
prayers and kind comments! heather's site won't let me login to do so for I know not why? Tell them I love them all and hope to be back posting soon enough. Hope you are doing better! -Bob

Sounds like Bob is still in his humerous nature! Can't wait until he's back with his IBS family!

I don't know Bob's last name, and I'd like to send him a little something. I tried the hospital but he was no longer in the room number I had, and without his full name they can't find him for me.

Yes Beth, you're right, and thanks very much for your card!
Also, thanks AC and Sand for your wonderful cards too! Thanks
to you all for your very kind comments and prayers. They're
working , I'm improving< they still won't let me walk by
myself yet, but I'm getting there. My biggest problem is my
left arm and hand. I'm still having problems with pressing
the shift key and not sliding off and pushing every other
key around it. MY IBS hasn't been that bad, fortunately,
I've had to stray from the diet(but it's fun:)) or not eat.
The BM's havent been fun but at least regular and nonurgent.
Very surprisingly my upper GI symptoms haven't been bad at
all lately. THe first three days of switching diet was rough
, but that's been it. Obviously I finally found a computer
that lets me login to the boards, but the one in my ward
does not! Well, it's just about snack time, I have to
scoot from the main lobby where I'm not supposed to be by
myself. Luckily, this computer is hidden in a corner out of
sight . I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving! Love
y'all! -Bob

So good to hear from you! Sounds like you are progressing along!

I'm glad, and surprised, you're doing so well with your GI system. That's a small miracle in itself.

Any idea when you'll be out of the hospital? I was in the hospital for Thanksgiving one year...and it wasn't too bad!

Take care and hope to hear from you whenever you can sneak back onto the computer!

So happy to see you are doing better! I'll keep my fingers crossed that your IBS will continue to do OK in spite of the diet change. So why won't the computer in your ward let you log in?? No Internet access? (haha, sorry, I am a computer geek for a living, and inquiring geeky minds want to know. )

Hope you will continue to do well and recover. Take care of yourself!

I managed to slip out of my ward again. I went down to the
laundry room and borrowed some surgeon duds so the guards
can't tell who I am with the mask on. The people at the
other two terminals are looking at me kinda strange.Probab-
ly because there is no regular surgery going on this time
of night. If they ask, I'll just tell them I'm on call for
ER duty tonight. UH OH! wouldn't you know it, the ambulance
just pulled up. Just my luck, I'd better scoot before some-
one figures out I'm not a real doctor, nor did I stay in a
Holiday Inn express last night. I'll try and get to your
email tomorrow. -Bob

Heya Bob! Yep, my dog is a purebred siberian husky... we're his 4th owners, but we've had him since he was about 8mos old. I'd highly recommend huskies as pets now having lived with one for a year and a half. They're quiet and real clowns... but the best thing is that they don't have the gland or whatever that causes horrible dog breath, so his kisses are always sweet.

I saw malemutes on the Bravo channel-- they aired one of the big annual dog shows and I was glued to the working dog part of the competition to see how the huskies did. Those malemutes are BIG! And very fluffy! They make my husky look like a little lapdog.

I'm glad the mail got to you considering the room shuffling and lack of last name on the envelope! I'm glad you're amusing yourself in the hospital bacause I know those extended stays can be extremely boring. I hope at least you have a cute nurse. LOL!

my doc suggested that may be the cause, only since that one week i havent experienced any of those symptoms. he offered to do an internal exam only i really really dont like those. he did however give me a # to a GI doc that he said i could talk to. i still have to make an appt. hopefully all will be good! how much longer are you in the hospital for? did you tell your doctor about this site and the information youve learned from it? i told my doc all about heathers here but i think that most of them think all the generic drugs will make IBS better hang in there bob!!

Hi Ashley, I'm pretty sure that's all it is and nothing
worse, especially now that I'm an experienced ERD<LOL>.
I think your doc was just trying to save you some money
and time.I hate to tell you this, but the GI doc is going
to do a DRE. No,I didn't tell my doc about this site, no
way I want him finding out about my antics here. I may be
released this saturday, provided I behave myself.
Hope you are feeling better. -Bob

Hi Michelle, They don't want leaving the ward by myself for
fear of my falling down. That's why they send "the guards"
out to capture all escapees. Unfortunately, where I am now
in the main lobby is where the only fully functional comp-
uters are. Thanks very much for yor kind comments and prayer
s, they are very much appreciated! -Bob

Thanks very much Kree, Your prayers are very much appreciat-
ed! Yes, My IBS isn't too bad right now, but I'm still hav-
ing to strain, and my GI doc's buddy says I should go down
to Chicago for more tests at NU's medical school, which I
will probably do soon. -Bob

THAnks very much Laurel! Hope your conference went well!
Can't say too much right now, "the guards" do a 730pm bed
check to check for any escapes, so I gotta get back for that

i go to a doctor [dr.dagantis] apart of Dreyer Medical Clinic. those clinics are around my moms house in the geneva-batavia-st.charles area. thats about 45 minutes from my house near the city. he recommended this GI doc over at mercy hospital. im sorry i dont know the town that hospital's in but if you do a search it should bring up results. did you ever get to try that triple-fiber blend? keep in touch! ash~

That's where my docs were from when I lived up north, as I assume you do since you have talked about going to Oakton CC.

I saw the fiber supplement in the HFS, but it is a total of 4 grams fiber per serving, 3 or which are Insoluble. and only 1 gram soluble. So I didn't think this was safe since it was predominately insoluble. Are you taking it?

Hi Jen, Thanks very much for your well wishes! I don't know
why the ward computer does'nt allow logining in to this site
, but this site isn't the only one. At the end of Heather's
URL it prints something about a default somethingorother,
the machines in the lobby don't do that and let me login
too. -Bob
