Peppermint oil and gas

Recently, I have started to take a peppermint oil supplement in capsules which also contain ginger and fennel. I have noticed a marked difference in my ability to digest many foods, and it has helped the pain and cramping tremendously. However, since I began taking them, I have also developed really awful smelling gas. I don't know if it's because I am releasing more of it now, or if the peppermint oil capsules are actually creating more gas...Has this happened to anyone else? If so, do you know why, or what I could do to stop it?
Thanks!

I have just started taking Heather's Pepermint/Fennel/Ginger capsules...only 1 in the morning and 1 at night...No gas concerns, but about an hour or 2 after taking them, no matter what I've eaten, I get this strange kind of minty taste in my mouth...noticed it yesterday and again today...hasn't helped the D just yet, but will keep it up...

I actually forgot to mention that I have been taking 2 capsules a half an hour before meals, instead of the recommended one. Perhaps this could be part of the reason? I think today I will decrease the dose to one capsule at a time, and see if that helps.
I'll let you know!

Hi Elaine, Do you have GERD? The minty taste in your mouth
means the capules dissolved in your stomach, and whenever
you burp you will taste peppermint. If it's happening within
an hour or two is also indicative of them not getting past
your stomach, which in turn would be the reason why they're
not helping with your D. -Bob

This is just a theory but maybe the pain and cramping you had before was trapped gas, and the peppermint is helping you pass it. I just read somewhere that since peppermint relaxes the intestinal muscles, it can allow gas to pass more easily.

This is true - and the fennel releases trapped gas too. nt- new

Hi Bob...No...to my knowledge I do not have GERD, and it is not from burping that I taste it...it's more like a sensation as I breath...really kind of odd...?? It's not a terribly bad thing, just there...:-)

peppermint should be taken in small doses - the oils can be toxic to the body at high concentrations. if i take too much peppermint i develop really bad stomach cramps and diarrhea
