my friends grandfather swears by this and i have tried it as well:
whenever you experience constipation, there are 2 things that can help:
1. take aloe vera pills: i use 470mg from the vitamin shoppe usually one in the evening gets the job done the next day
2. ever experience that feeling when you just know something is trapped in there, but doesn't want to come out? get yourself a plastic syringe at the drug store, sterilize with 75% alcohol, and draw up enough water to fill the entire syringe. insert into the you know what and depress the plunger. repeat 2 more times then have a seat and let it out. this is technically not considered an enema and i really doin't think it is habit forming - just use it when you really need it.
peace

I buy one that says it's only inner leaf gel and I find that my D gets better when I take it. I've read that it's only the outer leaf that causes D and problems and that the inner leaf gel is good for D and pain? Now I'm confused, any clarification would be lovely.

aloe like anything else you put in to your body is fine as long as it is not abused. aloe is not a harsh stimulant laxative like senna and from what i have ready appears to be quite safe and effective. some studies suggest it helps prevent colon cancer.

Aloe Vera and IBS: Is it safe? from IBS Newsletter, includes links to article below and another reference.
"Safety of Aloe a Concern" from the IBS Research Library and includes a list of references.
A search should provide more anecdotal experiences of board members plus two other articles from the IBS Research Library.
Hope this helps!

I think aloe is safe, BUT ONLY TOPICALLY, i.e. on your skin/epidermis as a moisturizer/salve!!! It's great on sunburns or to soften your skin.
