Splenda is the newest artificial sweetener on the market, and it's misleadingly marketed as "natural" because it's engineered from real sugar. In fact, the deceptive "natural" label has resulted in nine consumer class-action suits in several states and three federal commission complaints, and is also being being disputed by the American Sugar Association, which is suing Splenda's manufacturer. Splenda is a laboratory engineered altered molecule of sugar that replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms. Yum! Splenda is not recognized by the body as a food substance, and it passes through the gut without being digested. I'd say this is about as far from a "real" food as you can get, and there is nothing remotely natural about it.
Simple, who cares? It's a big waste of time. Rhetoric to confuse the average person and push them into something else. The sugar industry is upset because it hurts their sales. Splenda is called a "left handed" sugar because of the modification.
As for chlorine, every molecule of table salt is 50% chlorine. So there, don't listen to ridiculous babble.

the point is that artificial sweetners irritate the gi tract, so people with ibs, whose gi tracts are extra-sensitive, should avoid them.
aside from that, with this "babble" you're talking about, it's just good to know that "natural" doesn't always mean what it seems like. some people eat organic, and those things matter.

Okay, so I think the first paragraph in your email is a quote from Heather's IBS Newsletter. Right? The rest then is yours, but I'm not quite sure what your point is.

is how it makes my gut feel. And I appreciate knowing how the GI tract will react to foods etc I eat.
If you want to hate the sugar industry's rhetoric then get pissed off about stevia not splenda and try to get a lessening in the use of HFCS!

You're missing the point. Splenda is an artificial sweetener, NOT the natural alternative that the marketing folks would have you believe. It irritates the GI tract. Period. And most of us are interested in knowing that kind of thing.

It is being blocked by the sugar companies and the government and so that is something to get riled up about.

Splenda isn't natural. It is mislabeled but for people on this board that is besides the point. I agree with others. What we geniunely care about is how it affects our physiology.
