I am recovering from a severe Breakdown and have recently, after many tests and numerous cameras!! been diagnosed as having IBS. I am trying to follow "Eating For IBS" but find that any stress triggers a violent reaction with my IBS. Would following an intensive detox therapy help? I will try anything!!! brenton@brentonwilliams.com

Hi, and welcome to the boards.
I would try yoga to relieve some stress and stick with the diet. Yoga is said to also help digestion.
Hope this helps.

Brenton, Welcome to the Eating for IBS Diet board! You may want to check the research library section. There was an article recently about how anxiety, stress, depression, etc. are linked to IBS. I have had depression and panic attacks in the past, and now have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder (manic depression.) I know sometimes a small dose of an antidepressant will help with IBS symptoms. If you are not already taking one, maybe you could talk to a doctor about this? I know they have helped a lot of people with IBS. Do a search on the boards for "antidepressants in the treatment of IBS."

I was on Zoloft for a couple years for depression (grief of a lost loved one) and it helped my IBS, too. I was on a very low dosage. You might ask your doc about it.

I took Wellbutrin for a few years and just a month or 2 ago my dr switched me to Lexapro, both are anti-depressants. I find that they help alot. Let your dr know if you are C or D because certain drugs work better depending on which IBS you have. I would really ask your dr about it!

Welcome! I'd really suggest you look into the IBS hypnotherapy program. It could be super helpful for the anxiety, stress, and related IBS attacks. There's a hypno board on this site and also info here web page

Thank you Heather, here in England you feel isolated with IBS especially as a man, as the subject is virtualy taboo. Friends and even my partner dont understand and think it is all in the mind. I will definately keep in touch with your support group.
Once again Thank You
Brenton

I am prepared to try anything. Here in England IBS is a Taboo subject especially as a man so any help is welcome.
Who is "Martha Stewart" I am probably making a fool of myself here.

Brenton, I'm a little late replying but please don't let yourself get stuck believing this is "all in your mind". I too came through a LOT of stress over the past year and tried to ignore worsening symptoms for a long time because I just figured I'd "stressed myself into it", that somehow the anxiety I was feeling was responsible for my pain, and so I just worked harder and harder NOT to feel anxious or stressed, which of course only leaves you feeling guitly and helpless. When I started talking to people about my feelings that helped tremendously, and as a Christian I learned how to give my feelings of being pressured and overwhelmed over to the Lord little by little. But the fact of the matter was that I ALSO had some very real physical problems that accounted for what was going on, INCLUDING IBS, which is a very real biological, physical problem. So, be encouraged, stick around here - you will glean a lot of information and support. Sounds like the hypno tapes may be a good option for you. Good luck!

Michelle

Hi Brenton!
Don't feel bad about your having IBS, honestly there are alot of us who have trouble telling people about our IBS because there is alot of people who don't have alot of support. I have been very fortunate and have a wonderful group of people surrounding me, but some of the people on the board aren't so lucky. Just remember that's what we are hear for.
Martha Stewart is a Housekeeping Goddess. She has a TV show, magazine etc and teachs people how to make cakes, plant flowers, throw parties etc etc etc, needless to say - she is trying to domesticate someone - but it's not working on me LOL.

Hi Michelle,
Thank you for your thoughts and encouragement. I too have had several physical conditionsthat my specialist believes helped contributeto the IBS. I certainly will stick around and will take up your advice about the tapes.
Once again many thanks and God Bless.

Once I got put on Zoloft (an antidepressant in the same group of drugs as lexapro)and it made my IBS worse, so be careful with those anti-depressants and if they have a bad effect you need to weigh the beneifits vs the cost. I think its anti-depressants wich actually triggered my IBS in the first place.

I've been trying to figure out why I suddenly got ibs in my late forties, and wondered if the fact that I began on an antidepressant just before it, had any bearing. You're the first person I've heard about who might confirm that theory. Has anyone else had that experience or suspicion? Linda

Welcome, Brenton. Our emotions and our intestines are all "tangled up" together and affect each other back and forth. Many of us have found anti-depressants have helped, but others have found they don't. I am discovering that it takes a while to try to find what will work for YOU, and it may not be what works for anybody else. Like Michelle, I am finding that I must rely more and more on my Christian faith to get me through this. I, too, didn't really have much support from people in my life until I found this site. Mostly my family just really didn't understand what was going on with me. I now feel much more comfortable discussing IBS with them, and educating them because I can back up what I say about it with research from this site and Heather's book, as well as from everybody's shared experience. We're all in this together. Hang in there! There are solutions.

Hi Brenton
Like you, I'm an IBS sufferer in the UK and I'd had trouble explaining IBS to people. I was lucky to find a GP and a consultant who are very sympathetic and helpful. I think my GP finds me interesting - he seems to be using me to educate the rest of his practice about IBS, which can only be a good thing!
I've also suffered from a lot of depression, which was all tangled up with my IBS. Remember that IBS and depression seem to be interlinked - IBS makes you depressed and depression makes your IBS worse. But hang in there!
I found with my partner and family that it was helpful to give them a book on IBS to read - why don't you ask your partner to read the first few chapters of Heather's book, 'IBS - The First Year'? And then talk over what they've read about and try to answer any questions they might have. I know from my fiance that having a partner with IBS can be very confusing and scary, so we've got to give them time and understanding (something that I know isn't easy when you're feeling ill). He gets cross with me if I don't let him know how I've been feeling so that he can be prepared for a bad attack. Keeping on talking is essential.
There are plenty of people in the UK with IBS. We are not alone! Hope this helps.

Lots of people have contacted me and linked IBS with lots of different antidepressants. I am seeing my IBS Consultant on 8 September and intend discussing it with him. I will post a message if i get any information. My Psychiatrist was unaware of any link!

Brenton, Figure me if I've already passed this on to you, but I couldn't remember if I have or not. There is a great article on the web about this subject. It was written by three doctors at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill which has the world's leading research center on IBS. I'm not sure how to pull the link up, but I just type in the title of the article on the web and it comes up. Try that! It's called "The Use of Antidepressants in the Treatment of Irritable Bowel." I printed the entire article the other day and took it by my psychiatrist's office so that I could discuss it with him at the next visit. Good luck!
