I've been meaning to write this for ages. A very, very big thanks for the newsletters, Heather. Earlier this year you featured an article regarding bacterial overgrowth after discovery of coeliac disease. I also found an article in the Australian IBS News, which organisation I wouldn't have known about except for a post from you earlier this year. This article discussed the same sort of thing in people with IBS.

These 2 articles finally gave some credence to what I had been telling my doctor for the last 2 years. (I have actually changed my doctor, but they all seem to have the same tunnel vision).

My Nutritionist found it really helpful as well.

Anyway, I always get heaps from the articles and from the message boards.

Once again, a heartfelt thanks.

Regards,
Bev.

PS: One of these days I'll get organised enough to put up a picture!

Hello~ I was wondering if you could tell us if you were diagnosed with Celiac Disease (Coeliac)...?
I am awaiting test results from my biopsies and my daughter was diagnosed also with 'possible' positives.
I also read the article you are speaking about and gave the info. to our doctor(s). Not much was said on the subject, no comments worth noting, unfortunately. Anyway,...
Welcome to the boards!

Hi, sorry I've been away and haven't checked the message boards lately. My then doctor was actually treating me for guardia - 4 lots of very severe antibotics in 2 years! I ended up giving up on the doctor and went to a naturopath who diagnosed gluten intollerence. I started on a gluten free diet and went back to the doctor. A blood test came up with the anti-glyden antibody, but by the time I was referred to a specialist and finally had the biopsy, almost 6 months had passed and my villi looked healthy. I wasn't prepared to go back on a normal diet. This was 3 year's ago.

I believe I have got coeliac disease because of my reactions - D and bloating and pain 24 hours a day, leaving me unable to sleep - and family history. My current doctor concurs and so does my nutritionist. This ambivilence seems to be pretty common among many in the Australian internet support group for coeliacs, which I belong to. (After further tests they also came up with dairy intollerence and finally IBS).

It's hard for coeliacs, but testing is becoming better. Blood tests are becoming much more sophisticated and geneticists are starting to say that a cure will probably be found in 10 to 20 years or so.

For me, I know I am much better following a Heather's diet, with gluten free modifications. I'm also off yeast and sugar because, probably being so severely sick for so long, I developed chronic fatigue syndrome and all the evils that go along, i.e. candida.

I'm slowly getting back my health, but I firmly believe that my IBS has come about as a result of the chronic and constant inflamation of my gut and my nervous/gut system being programmed to evacuate whenever food (gluten) entered my body.

Sorry for being so long winded, but it gets kind of complicated.

Best of luck,

Bev

Hi Bev,
You were not long winded at all - it was fun to read your story! Good for you for taking charge of your own health and finding a good doctor.
Hope your health continues to go well for you.

Not long winded at all. I completely understand everything you've posted and I can identify with it ALL.
Europe is far more advance than the US, as far as Celiac Disease goes. Apparently, many of their McDonald's there even offer gluten-free hamburger buns. Pretty cool.
I would like to invite you to email me if you wish... sounds like we could connect on a Celiac level, among the other things. I also have many recommendations to give, and I'm interested in what I might learn from your experiences. You can reach me at FREE2BDEE@aol.com
Take care,

I've been wanting to know more about this new info so any insights you can share from your reading and experience would be great.
How did this info help you?
If it did help you, what did you do that was helpful?
Was it helpful for constipation or diarrhea dominant IBS?
Thanks!

Lithelady, I found the information very helpful because firstly it validated what I had already believed - that my stomach/bowels were in a very unhealthy condition, contrary to what my old doctor had said.

My new doctor found it interesting and said she would consider it when treating other patients with coeliac who seemed to have problems recovering. Her solution was antibiotics, but of course, this was not for me.

The nutritionist suggested I undertake a course of natural tablets called Paraplex by Othoplex - its a local natural medicine company. I'm presently undertaking the course which is 3 weeks taking the tablets and then having a break for 2 weeks and then taking another 3 week course. At the moment I'm in the break.

I am feeling better - less wind for one thing, and the yeast infection seems less. I've always had the D. I've also had a little success adding back some foods into my diet that were no-no's before, like salmon steaks and eggs with the yolks. I've only had the eggs twice though - still very tentative.

I think we've all felt at the end of our tether and reading books, like Heathers, surfing the net, newsletters, all help us to understand our problems.

Hope you are feeling well,

Best regards,

Bev
