This may not be the right forum....but last year I sent an email to the Oprah show, asking them to do a show on IBS. I didn't hear anything back from them so I figured they had just ignored it. However today I get an email from them:

My name is Alex Castro and I'm a producer with the Oprah Winfrey show. I'm writing to you in response to the e-mail you sent us last June where you mentioned you suffer from IBS. I would like to ask you a couple of questions about your condition when you have a chance. Please call me back
at 312 633-xxxx. If you could also e-mail me a couple of pictures of yourself for my file I would really appreciate it. Looking forward to speaking with you.

Take Care,
Alejandro Castro
Associate Producer
The Oprah Winfrey Show

Do you think this is legit? I did email them, but I dont remember just when last year. Has anyone else heard from them? Any suggestions on what I should say to them? I'm not going to call back today, I'm much too busy but I think I might tomorrow. Help!! LOL

Shari

I just went to Oprah.com and a future topic IS "Do you suffer from a bowel disorder?" So, it sounds like the email is legit. Here's the link to that particular Oprah topic. Wow! That would be great if she did a show about IBS!

I just checked out the site and it seems fairly secure and it says that will not share our personal info with anyone without our written consent. Here is the link again https://www.oprah.com/plugger/templates/BeOnTheShow.jhtml?action=respond&plugId=D168600013. I think we should ALL take a few minutes and let them know that IBS is a REAL problem, that its NOT all in our heads and its about time the health care and pharmacutical people came up with an accpetable treatment for IBS!

My name is Allison Schloss & I am 20 years old. I have been suffering from IBS since I was about 14 years old. I constantly missed school and doctors could not figure out why. My parents assumed I didn't like school and that was the reason I was getting so sick. After seeing about 6 or 7 doctors and going through countless tests, it was concluded that I had IBS. I was told people don't usually suffer from IBS at such a young age, but some children who dealt with a great degree of stress at an extremely young age are just prone to it. When I went off to college I became so sick and lost so much weight that I had to leave school and take a semester off. It was during that time period that I experimented with different foods and tried to figure out a somewhat steady diet that I could follow. Most of the time I was eating the completely wrong things and was getting worse and worse. Then I discovered a lady named Heather Van Vorous, and my life completely changed. I ordered her book and joined a community of other people living and coping with IBS on her website, helpforibs.com. It was amazing how nice people were in answering my many questions and to realizing I wasn't alone in this. In the fall I had transferred to a new school and I am currently a junior at the University at Albany. Although Heather's diet and books have helped me immensely, I was unable to escape the stress from my family life at home. In the past three years I have been in and out of the hospital every few months, sometimes spending a week at a time only to leave with no good news. I sometimes get so sick I can't eat or drink for days at a time and I faint. That is when it becomes time to make the trip to the hospital. I cannot tell you how frustrated I am with doctors telling me there is nothing they can do for me and that the only conclusion they can make is that I have a "really bad case of IBS." I would like to share my story to help other young people like me to realize they aren't alone.

So, a women just called me from Oprah and asked me "my story" kinda thing. She was very nice and asked me to email her a picture, apparently they want to be sure you are fit for public viewing!!! LOL!! I explained to her about this site and how frustrated we are with the doctors and that we are concerned about the RIGHT info being given and she said "oh, yes, we have several specialist coming to talk with us." Although she told me she couldn't tell me who these specialist were. She said they are taping the show a week from Monday but didn't know when it would air. I really hope they do right by us!!!

The guy from Oprah called me tonight too. We talked for like 10 mins, spoke about usual stuff - whats it like to have it, how do you deal with it, how has it affected your life. I told him about Heather and her website too. He said he would be getting back in touch with me about it, said they were having some kind of meeting tomorrow. He too wanted me to send him a photo. He didn't say they were taping so soon, he didn't mention taping at all, but he did say that they were for sure doing a show on it. I'm so glad! I got the impression that they were looking for people to be on the show, but he didn't come right out and say that. I thought maybe they were looking for people to be in the audience or something, who knows? I'll be sure to post again if I hear anything back.

who was very sweet. I'm not really sure what will come of it. It would be wonderful to have a chance to get on there and address all the dietary issues and especially to give a patient's point of view. He did mention that there will be doctors on the show but I don't know that they'll address how people can actually manage to live (successfully!) with the disorder personally.

I'll keep people posted if I hear anything else.

is the whole audience full of folks with IBS from these message boards. How fabulous would it be for someone watching the show to see an entire studio full of people with IBS who took charge, got help, and are finally doing better? That would make such an impression on any viewer with IBS that they can feel better, too.

I wrote to them too, but I doubt they'll contact me 'cause I am in Canada - but maybe the response will just be another one convincing them to do the show!!
I would LOVE to be able to go and be in the audience, especially if there were people I know up on stage!!
And it's Oprah, maybe she'll buy us all houses or something, hee hee. Just kidding.

not all of us are doing so well. I've been trying this diet for quit a while now, and I am in just as much pain and as symptomatic as ever. I want just want it to work for me like it has helped all you others.

Don't mean to be a party pooper, but I'm just not getting better. So I am still in the group that would be sitting in the audience feeling hopeless with my IBS. Unfortunately, there seem to be others on the board who also continue to suffer despite trying their best to do everything the diet recommends.

Are we doing something wrong? Why won't the EFI work for us?
Does this diet approach just not work for some folks?

I love these boards and all the wonderful folks here. The support has been a life-saver to me. I don't think I could handle this all alone. Unfortunately, I have had no success so far with any reduction in symptoms.

I know these boards have helped many of you, but I just wish I was one of you. Please don't kick me off for posting this downer. I need you guys! But I'm having a hard time and getting frustrated.

Gosh that'd be soooo nice!!!
They better do a damn good job tho!!
I want emphasis on the pain and the damage it does to your lifestyle, the need to get awareness out and NATURAL remedies to those suffering!!!!

My mom suffered with IBS for 30yrs and every Dr shrugged it off as Lactoce Intollerance, she came back complaining of the still painfull symptooms and so they said it was severe Lactoce Intolerance!!! *rollz eyes*

I also wanna move to have IBS seen as a result of C-sections so the symptoms are disccused with women to look for!!!
Grrrrr!

A chance to get the word out on Oprah is looooong overdue!

Hi can anyone offer me a little advice, Ive had IBS since I was 12, im now 23 at times it has been totally debilitating when it was D based, but as I had it for such a long time I started to realise what foods affected me till I'd cut out so many foods there wasnt much left to eat, I havent eaten any fruit or veg in years and am petrified of trying new things incase it sets it all off again at the moment I live on:
white bread
crunchy oat cereal
flapjacks
Plain pasta no sauces
Fish in breadcrumbs
Vegetarian chicken style nuggets
potato's
Soya cheese slices
Dark chocoate

As you can see this is not a healthy diet but im really concerned about adding any insoluble fibre to my diet
Any advice?

I think it's so important that people see all of us, esp you, Augie!! All of us are at different parts of the cycle, and it's so important to get the word out that there are people who progress past the hopeless stage, even into the Doing Well Functioning in Society stage...! It's all trial and error and it's just sticking to Whatever Works for you for your own diet, plus the care, love and support of the rest of us in the same boat.

I hope there's a program on this and it's done well.

me too beth!! I love this board and Heather is a very giving person and has helped lots of people - unfortunately I am not one of them and have had to go my own way...I hope this program, if it runs will be a good representation of the fact that part of the problem with IBS is the fact that there is no set treatment....

Thank you for your compassionate response. I hope one day I will eventually move from the hopeless stage to the Doing Well stage! I pray so hard for that.

And yes, the love, care and support from all you others who are still struggling as well as the support from those who are doing well is what keeps me going! I love you all for that!

I also help they do this program well, and not floss over it for the "hollywood" effect. If Oprah's never experienced it herself, it might be hard for her to really "get it".

And Heather has been a godsend to so many, and for that I am so grateful. I haven't given up yet guys!! Hope to perhaps join you one day in the world of less severe painful and symptomatic living!

That's what makes this darn IBS demon so frustrating. Because we all have to find our own triggers/ healing foods/ treatment plans/ tolerance levels, etc.

I think this has been mentioned to you before but I wasn't sure. It's been a godsend for people who really felt hopeless after trying everything else. Check out the hypno message board if you have any questions.

Best,
Heather

Thank you for your kind words! I want you to know that I do appreciate all the work and help you have given to so many people. I thank you for this website and for your giving nature. I wouldn't be able to do this without this site. Thank you.

I love the boards, I love Heather and the fact that she has helped so many of you but like you I'm completely lost. I feel like I've tried pretty much EVERYTHING! Well except hypno but with 3 kids to support I'm afraid that's just out of my budget
I'd also like to see a representation of the folks who feel lost and I'd also like them to see that Heather's diet is a possibility to feel better. Both sides of the coin I guess. Love to you all

Augie- You took the words right outta' my mouth.
I am having a hard time also. I am very symptomatic also- Some days worse than others. I can't pintpoint what foods cvause me grief as they say sometimes foods don't cause an "immediate" problem.

I have pain/discomfort all the time no matter what I eat. It has changed my life.

But---- I try to stay positive, although sometimes I get bummed out because I don't understand whay all of a sudden my body decided this was going to be how it is.

It is very frustrating but this board is a wonderful place to let it all out to people who understand.

Hang in there though okay- Because believe me you aren't alone- I am one of the persons who also tried the diet and didn't get any relief.

But we'll keep chuggin' along right"
