has anyone found that simply massaging your stomach helps? I just started this today... I'm carefully but firmly massaging my abs/gut where I usually have ibs pusling/contractions. It seems to diminish the pulsing. I also have an anxiety disorder... I almost wonder if the anxiety goes to my gut, and massaging it helps release it. Does this make any sense or am I just talking nonsense here?

Check the yoga board - there have been posts about this, and there are actually specific ways to do abdominal massage for IBS.

Hi Kenneth, I'm a certified massage therapist and I have been practicing massage since 1994. I have worked on my own colon and have had other therapists work on me and let me tell you - NOBODY can do it like you can. You know just the right feel of what is good and what is too much. If you gently massage your colon beginning and the ascending, to the transverse, then the descending colon (in that order) you will be amazed at how your gentle touch and the warmth from it comforts you. If you can, use a little oil (not baby oil - but veggie oil, almond, grapeseed, etc) or lotion to allow your fingers, hands, and fists to move around easily without pulling your skin. If you can access essential oils I use Tea Tree or Marjoram (both act as analgesics) and either mix a few drops with the oil/lotion or use them alone. As with all massage, make sure you drink alot of water afterward - it helps flush the toxins out of your system. Also, when working on your colon, make sure you continue to breathe, when you stop breathing your muscles don't breathe. Good luck. Let me know how things go. Georgia
