Any advice on this? My doctor has prescribed Zelnorm for me but from what I have read (and searched for on here) this drug is primarily used by women. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Brian

My dad was prescribed 2 Zelnorm pills to take before his colonoscopy. (He also had to take some laxatives.) That's the only time I've heard of it prescribed for men.

Perhaps it was only studied on women, but it might still work on you? I guess it's worth a try....

I specifically asked my doctor about this (she is always ready to answer questions). She said it is only because they tested it on women and not men or children. So technically I would think you are on your own if you take it and it wasn't okayed for men. And that is kind of scary after the drugs they do test and approve only to find out they are hurting people! Yikes. Also I didn't do so well with it and I definitely recommend caution and go off it the minute you become too loose. (As it has killed people who do not use common sense and go off it when needed). Also as long as I am blabbing, it was only tested for a few weeks dose; that is why doctors prescribe it for a couple months but no more. Hope this helps!

How has it hurt people? What did it do to you? My GI doc just gave me some samples to try and I took some about a half hour ago. Besides headaches, does it do worse things?

In my opinion Zelnorm is very dangerous. Doctors put people on it without asking enough questions. Whether they do that because they get a kickback or not I don't know, however it is the "it" drug for sure. Anyway a doc (not my doc) said I was C one time after x-raying my hip and so he prescribed Zelnorm. I didn't know about it at all but he just said "research it online". Well for me being IBS A Zelnorm was bad news. After a couple days I got D and then lessened my dose but just kept getting more D. The problem with Zelnorm (besides the lack of heavy duty testing before FDA approval) is that people get D from it and aren't clever enough to stop taking it and there has been at least one death from that scenario. I can't believe anyone is that dumb but whatever. But since it is only prescribed for short periods I don't know what good it can really do in the long run. Although there is nothing wrong with it if it is used appropriately. I don't think Heather disapproves of it as she does with things that are harsh and trigger bad responses. So some people do fine with it but everyone should be cautioned about the dangers and be informed on the usage!

I took Zelnorm for 3 months.... (I was severely C), and it did help me a lot at first. I very rarely got slight diahorrea, and not for long. The main problem with Zelnorm, is that it is for short term use as the body grows accustomed to it and it no longer works.

there's a comprehensive page about Zelnorm in the IBS Glossary - that's right here
