I've read where many people get IBS when they are young. Is it possible for a traumatic digestive event to lead to IBS. I'm 32 and about three years ago I went to Martha's Vineyard and ate a lot of pizza about 20 mins later sitting at an outdoor concert I had to run to the bathroom, unfortunately there were none around, I don't need to into details after that. However, ever since that event my system has never been right and now I have to go to the bathroom every morning about 2-3 times. I'm using the diet and just began to take fiber supplements after getting over the fear that they were laxatives and would make me worse. Thanks. Matt

Hi Matt - Sounds like you had what's called an "insult to the gut", and yes, this can lead to the onset of IBS. There's info here web page

Hey Matt, I have an 'insult to the gut thing' too. I used to abuse my stomach by staying up all night, worrying about everything and anything, skipping breakfast, and eating chocolate bars for lunch. Man, if only time travel were real

I believe this is very possible. I trace my first IBS attack back to when I was 16 and dating a real jerk who my parents didnt like, but I was hopelessly "in love" with, until his behavior woke me up.

Although I've always had to watch "fatty" foods, my real trouble did not start until after a bad reaction to a Las Vegas buffet. My husband spent our tenth anniversary vacation having fun in the casinos while I spent our tenth anniversary finding all the bathrooms in Las Vegas! (The Paris Hotel/Casino has lovely bathroms!)

After that, my stomach and digestive system have not been right. All it takes is a flu to get me started with weeks of pain, bloating, nausea, and urgency again. I am hopeful that keeping my stomach full of soluble fiber will keep things in check.
