While at the Health Food Store yesterday, I asked one of the salespeople about Aloe Vera Caps for gas/bloating. She said that the aloe vera is good for the tummy but not for colon and suggested Peppermint oil caps for gas/bloating. THey're enteric coated softgels and were expensive, but if they stop the gas, who cares! They were $19.99 for 60 by Solaray. Haven't tried them yet--luckily the gas is at bay right now. I'll let you all know when I try them and how they work.

Peppermint capsules have several clinical studies that support their effectiveness for IBS. They've even been tested in children.

Shop around for different brands - I've noticed the price varies a lot.

What are your thoughts on using aloe vera? I am getting mixed information. I hear it's a healing sortof remedy, but then also a cleansing sort of plant, too. Since I have IBS-D, I don't need "cleaning"...at least I think.

I've heard mixed reports about aloe for IBS too. It does have anti-inflammatory properties and a great track record for healing and soothing skin burns and injuries. But I can't find any clinical studies that show digestive benefits. I have heard from people who have had good results, but I've also heard from people who had diarrhea result from drinking aloe.

It's definitely a safe and non-toxic plant with a long history of human use, so I would think there's no risk of serious side effects. But whether it will help or hurt IBS, I just don't have the facts to say.
