Has anyone ever taken a class in Bikram Method, often referred to as "hot yoga" ?

A friend of mine who's a sports nut loves it, she LOVES the fact that you sweat so much, She says that your towel is WRINGING wet coming out of it and you feel exhilirated. Haven't tried it myself though..

I'm sooo excited....I found a local studio who has the class late enough in the evening that I can make it!! So... I'm going tonight (UNLESS... my little friend shows up ) I have a coupon for the first class FREE and then single classes after that are $15 or you can buy like months or years packages...but I'm not gonna go that route until I've tried it a few times...besides, I would only be doing it on Fridays for now. Here is a cool discription of it....

Hot Yoga is an exciting, challenging and effective yoga class composed of breathing exercises and Hatha yoga postures performed in a hot room. This practice is designed to work every muscle, joint, ligament, tendon, gland and organ in the body, and the heat facilitates this process.
Hot Yoga balances the body and its major systems (respiratory, circulatory, muscular, digestive, elimination, nervous, and endocrine), rejuvenating and restoring overall health. The heat creates a safe environment for stretching the body and promotes the detoxifying process.
People of any age and condition can do this yoga. Some acutely ill have been cured of chronic disease (including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic back pain, etc.) as a result of practicing this form of yoga.
Quote:
Bikram yoga is an incredible workout that not only works your body, but your mind and your soul. Bikram yoga is a form of hatha yoga designed by Bikram Choudhury. It is "a twenty-six asana series designed to scientifically warm and stretch muscles, ligaments and tendons in the order in which they should be stretched." Bikram yoga is practiced in a heated room, usually up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The heated room allows your muscles to warm up quickly and stretch safely. So, even if you don't think you're very flexible, you'll be amazed how quickly your body will become more flexible and stronger with the heat and the postures. Your progress in Bikram yoga "will depend entirely on you -- upon your natural ability to a small extent, but mostly upon the honest time and effort you give to Yoga. It will have little to do with how 'perfectly' you can do the poses. (Few of us ever do the poses 'perfectly.') Instead, it will have to do with how well you understand what you are trying to accomplish in each pose, how honestly you try to accomplish your goal, and how supple your muscles and joints have become in comparison to the point at which you began. In Yoga there is no standard of comparison except yourself. Perfect is the best you can do that day."

OMG... that was just the coolest (well really pretty darn hot....105 degrees to be exact....) It was like doing Yoga in a Sauna... and every inch of my clothes were SOAKED.... I will do it again in a heartbeat!! Well, I say that now.... I'll see how I feel tomorrow.... I'm told, you better come back and do it the next day right after your first time or you will NEVER go back... cuz you will hurt all over...even your organs...so, this could be an interesting weekend.... I might be doing Hot Yoga in the morning instead of STEP & weight training.... as of now... one hour, 16 minutes and a hot shower and 2-1/2 bottles of water...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!

Yes, it made me nauseous and I felt a bit faint. But I don't like extreme heat.

With my Fibro, I LOVE tropical heat as it's the only time I feel really warm "in my bones" (yah, I'm weird ). But I have never heard of anywhere round here doing it. I'll keep my eyes out tho!

Thanks so much for posting this!!!! I was just looking for info about it and a place in my area. So far, I can't find anywhere in my area that offers Bikram yoga. I have never done yoga at all before. I don't really understand it and have been scared away by the meditation aspect of it... I don't know what yoga is all about exactly, but am open to learning more about it. Can you start Bikram without knowing anything about yoga? After reading the benefits of Bikram (and that some ppl enjoy it so much!) I'm anxious to give it a try! I think it would do my body a lot of good.
Thanks!

but you should be able to just take a class and see what you think. Let the instructor know beforehand that you're brand new, and she'll suggest modifications for poses throughout the practice so you can keep things at a beginner level. You'll probably be surprised by how quickly you are able to go deeper into poses, though, so don't be discouraged if it's challenging at first.
The meditation aspect is much easier than you think, and it gets easier with every practice. Most classes don't have a very long meditation period, so don't be scared. You'll likely come to really appreciate that aspect of class - it's very quieting and soothing.

I will keep looking for a place to do it in my area. I e-mailed a yoga studio today to ask if they offer it. They do offer beginner classes for yoga, so I will probably try that. I really hope they offer Bikram yoga because it sounds so great! I usually don't do well in heat because I often associate the heat with how I feel during a bad stomachache. But if I can learn to relax and stretch in the heat, I'll be able to get through a stomachache a little easier. I'm sure I'd feel better... AND would be able to drink more water in day to rehydrate myself! I have a problem drinking as much water as I should right now. Pop and flavored drinks are murder on my stomach, but I can't seem to completely cut them out of my diet. Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I will find a place to try this out and see how I like it!

I will be taking this again on Friday... it has been just over a year and I have not been back..... just cuz my schedule was all changed around right after I took this...but i started taking Yoga again last friday at my gym and did not care for the instructor.... so I decided I would check out this studio again to see what times the classes were and SCORE... the same time as the one at the gym!! I'm hoping this will help with my tight hamstrings that I have been seeing a physical therapist for...... crossing fingers is does not make it worse...... only down side is this is $15 for a walk in Vs free at the gym (included in my membership)...... oh well.... I have to enjoy it RIGHT?
