I have IBS-C with bloating, distention and all the fun stuff that goes with it. I am going to get certified in Pilates in August, but I have been thinking about a taking a Yoga class, I already do traditional workout - aerobics and weight training 2 hours a day, my question is this, how does Yoga help IBS-C. I am curious, I know relaxation somewhat but with all that I do and steam baths, hot baths some days things just don't get rolling like they should even eating right, but I have heard several IBS-Cer's say that Yoga has really helped them. Enlighten me please.
Thanks RLU

Hi - YogaTeacher will be able to give you much more comprehensive info here, but I know there are quite a few poses that directly help constipation and/or bloating. Twists (seated or standing) are especially effective for regulating digestion.
There's some poses for different GI symptoms listed here web page

RLU,
Sorry for the long wait in my reply.. I have been away at a teacher training and just returned. I have lots of thoughts on this... I definitely think that yoga can help with constipation. In fact there are several postures (that I've had confirmed from IBS-C'ers) that specifically seem to help them. Having said that, I must also say that it is the yoga practice as a WHOLE that is helpful with IBS and not just yoga postures. The breathing, the mindfulness, body awareness, meditation and the physical postures are all aspects of a complete package. If you are looking for some postures to relieve gas, cramping or to perhaps get a BM in gear, yoga postures can certainly help. I am currently working on a section of my website that will show the postures as well as describe them with words... until then, If you are interested, I would be more than happy to try to relate some of them to you. Just let me know. have a beautiful day.
