I know these can be safe but the only kind I can buy here are chocolate coated or have lots of fat in. Can anyone post/point me to a recipe? I've tried searching with no restrictions, with different spellings but no luck so far. Thanks

Hi - I don't even use a recipe for these, they're so easy. Just take one regular size package of marshmallows and melt in a double boiler with 2 T of canola (or safflower, sunflower, soybean) oil. Stir as you're melting. Or, you can put the marshmallows and oil in a BIG bowl and microwave for 30 seconds, stir, and repeat until everything is smoothly melted. Then stir in as much cereal as you can until the texture is dry but everything is still sticking together. Pat the mixture into a baking dish you've lightly sprayed with oil. It helps to wet your hands with cold water before you pat - less stuff will stick to them.
Also - you can stir in a couple tablespoons (just keep adding to taste) unsweetened cocoa powder to the marshmallow mix as it's melting for a chocolate version without added fat.
Chill the pan till cold and cut into squares.

Somethings I have learnt quickly that people don't tell you,..... only melt the marshmallows until the last one has JUST melted or else you will have hard as a sticky marshmallow squares.
Also - once you decide to pour the marshmallows into the dish work quickly because it becomes pretty firm rather quickly.
Pour your rice krispies into the square pan while you wait for the mallows to melt because trying to pour the mallows from into a bowl and then transfering into the square pan does NOT work.
I am not trying to treat you like a child, merely speaking from experience. I wish someone had told me these tips when I first made them.
It's about 40 marshmallows (lg) to about 4 cups or rice krispies.
Good Luck!

and loved them! The only problem is, they've all gone already!!LOL My husband asked if you could use 'marshmallow fluff' in them instead, that you buy in jars. He saw the mess made in the kitchen!

I have also experimented with using different flavorings such as coconut, lemon, almond, etc. I just add about 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon to the marshmallow mixture as it is about melted and ready to add the cereal to.

Yes - In fact, sometimes I'm in such a hurry to eat these I'll freeze them instead of refrigerate them so they'll chill quickly. So of course, I've forgotten about the pan in the freezer and had the whole batch freeze solid. They thaw perfectly!

ok real dumb question here...if you use fluff - do you have to add the canola oil to that too? also, do you need to heat the fluff before adding to the rice krispies???
This is totally a new one for me!

The storebought would most likely have dairy in them, since we adjust the original recipe to use oil instead of butter. And, I'm not sure what else they put in there. I would think they wouldn't be as safe as homemade.

Here are the calories based on the follow quantities:
2 Tablespoons Canola Oil
40 Large or 4 cups Mini Marshmallows
4 cups Rice Krispies
Makes 24 squares
Serving size: 2 squares
Calories per serving: 124
The "original" Rice Krispie Treat" recipe calls for 6 cups, but everyone else on post for RKT that is in the recipe index said they used 4-4-1/2 cups. So, to figure it out.... 1 cup of Rice Krispie Cereal is 100 caloires . So, you can adjust your calories accourdingly.

I tried this and I really liked it. I replaced the 6 cups of Rice Krispies with Cheerios, used 2 T Canola Oil and 1 bag mini marshmallows, and also added in about 1/2 cup dried cranberries. (You could even chop them to make them easier to digest, but I tolerate them fine right from the bag.) Yum!

I thought these sounded yummy, so I bought some marshmallows to make them with...but the marshmallows list beef gelatine as an ingredient. Probably a silly question, but as beef (meat) is a trigger, is beef gelatine (or any animal gelatine) safe? I think the answer is yes, as gelatine is extracted from bone(?) - but better safe than sorry!!Just to put my mind at rest so I can go ahead and enjoy without fear LOL

I usually use a 13x9 pan. But, you could probably use whatever size you'd like. They don't have to bake, they just kinda cool and stay in whatever shape you put them in. So, basically, whatever size you have that will hold them all (even 2 smaller ones if you don't have a big one)!

So I just made my very first batch of rice krispie squares, without rice krispies! I used dark chocalate coa coa powder, mini marshmellows, canola oil, and a 50/50 mix of rice checks and quaker puffed rice cereal! I was so excited I ended a year of message board silence to tell you guys about it! the rice chex are much crunchier then rice krispies!
