I was just wondering, we're supposed to be able to have cocoa powder in recipes because it's non-dairy but doesn't chocolate have caffiene in it? and wouldn't caffiene be a trigger for us? Also i'm IBS-D if that makes any difference.

Yes, cocoa powder does have some caffeine, but it's sooooo much less than what's in coffee and other caffeinated drinks that it doesn't bother most of us. If you do notice it bothering you, though, you could always try subbing carob powder instead.

Yep,

I found this out the hard way. After baking biscuits with cocoa powder and eating two in the evening, I spent the whole night completely wired - I must be really sensitive to it by now!

I have tried using carob, but have not got the hang of it yet. Does anyone know how much you are supposed to use? I made the antidepressant brownies using the same amount as you you would cocoa and it came out pitch black, with an odd taste and they made me very ill! Not surprisingly I'm a bit scared to use it again.

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

the caffeine in solid chocolate is tied to the fat. When the fat is removed, as it is in cocoa powder, most of the caffeine goes with it. Cocoa isn't caffeine free (IBSgirl posted a great list with actual quantities) but it should be tolerable for IBS.

Just an aside, and nothing scientific, I'm super sensitive to caffeine keeping me awake. Can't have tea of any kind after about 11 am, and even that can only be a once in a while type of thing, or I'm up all night. But I've never had a problem with anything made with unsweetened cocoa powder, even eaten late at night.
