Quick question everyone,
How long can you safely store cooked white rice in the fridge?
I made a whole heap on Saturday and thought I would use it up with dinners/lunches this week but I just wondered how long you can safely keep if for.
Thanks, Kerrie

I've had it last the better part of a week. It will dry out a bit but still taste okay. It actually makes the best fried rice if it's quite a few days old and kind of dried out.

I wasn't sure but I had thought I read somewhere recently that it would keep for a week...I just can't remember where I read it! I did find this online though:
Quote:
Q: How long can rice be stored?
A: Milled rice (white, parboiled or pre-cooked) will keep almost indefinitely on the pantry shelf. Once opened, rice should be stored in a tightly-closed container that keeps out dust, moisture and other contaminants. Brown rice, because of the oil in the bran layer, has a limited shelf life of approximately 6 months. Refrigerator storage is recommended for longer shelf life. Cooked rice, when not eaten immediately, should be cooled quickly. To store cooked rice, place in a shallow container, cover, and place in refrigerator. Cooked rice may be stored in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

Hope this helps! Mags

Kerrie - try smelling it or touching it with your finger. If it's slimy, toss it. If it smells okay...use your judgment.
I'm at a loss at smelling things...I can't smell--really. I always have to call Dan in and say, "Hon, will you smell this and tell me if it's still okay?" He just rolls his eyes!!!

Kerri, When you reheat the rice make sure you do it thoroughly because when you store it cooked, it starts growing a bacteria on it called bacillus cereas (sp?). Apparantly that's what causes most the food poisoning cases from chinese takeouts, because they haven't stirfried it for long enough. Sarah

I know! I have this weird thing that I love to try to find stuff on the internet. The harder it is to find, the better! My boss & my boyfriend love it. They always come to me saying, "I can't find (whatever they're looking for)." And I jump at the opportunity! To me, it's kind of like doing a crossword puzzle or something. I love a challenge.
Don't worry...I already know I'm weird! LOL

Angela, I kept my rice in the fridge for 5 days and it was absolutely fine. I think the key is to just make sure it is thouroughly reheated. I stop mine every 20 sec or so and give it a good stir, then microwave it till it's really hot. Then I just let it cool before I eat it.
