Quick but safe foods?

Hi i'm new around here and if this question has been asked before sorry for asking again. I was wondering what safe foods i could make that were quick to prepare for all meals of the day. i find a lot of my problem is settling for the stuff that is quick and not necessarily safe or good for me. I'm a university student so time is not always there to prepare the yummy recipies in heathers book. I have made a few though..mostly the breads.

Is there a health food store near you? My favorite food is Amy's frozen soy cheese pizza.

I add a little more soy mozarella and some turkey pepperoni to the pizza. It's incredible!

yeah lots of health stores. that sounds good. i think pizza is one of my favs. i make pita pizza with veggie shreds (mozzarella flavoured soy something..hehe) and yummy veggies all the time. i've been living on it lately i always make an extra for leftovers. i think a lot of my problem is portable food for on the run. and yummy stuff..i have a sweet tooth and could eat sweet breakfasty things all the time. so lots of breakfast items suggestions would be good. i've been making lots of soy milk, banana, and other fruit smoothies..they are so good maybe even too good.

Smoothies are always good!!!!!!!! But you're right, sometimes tooooo good. A little trick of mine when I need to grab something that is portable and doesn't need to be refrigerated is to make a rice cake sandwich. I put a tiny bit of peanut butter and brown sugar inbetween 2 slices, dump the sandwich in a zip bag and then it can go anywhere...and even if it doesn't get eaten that day it stays good for a long time. I think I had one in my car a week! I tried it and it was still fine.
I've also carried those individual serving cans of tuna everywhere, and they can be opened and put on crackers/bread/pita/whatever.
Bananas travel well as does the dried ones from the health food store. You have to keep it really simple when you're thinking "on the run" otherwise it may not hold up well...BTW, any of the brownies on the recipe board travel well as does Heather's breads.
I often don't worry about a "real meal" until I have the time to sit down and enjoy it, either at home or out...

I carry around fat free pretzels to snack on -- for when I'm hungry and haven't had time to eat. Plain bagels - with soy cream cheese (tofutti) - I even eat that for lunch! If you don't buy the bagels that are in the health food store -- buy them from the bakery (or the bakery section of your grocery store) -- they'll have less preservatives. I still check the label for ingredients.

the funny thing is i made one today to drink on the way to class and it was -43 C with the windchill..brr it actually partially froze on 12 minute walk.

is soy cream chesse good? i'm a die hard cream cheese addict and am sad that i can't eat it anymore. i used to eat it right out of the container..hehe i'd like to try the soy stuff but if i can find it i'm scared it won't be any good. does it really taste like the true cream cheese or is it just an immitation?

ROFLOL that is way too funny. I would imagine with temps like that it would freeze. I always forget what the C and F configurations are. You know what I mean? What would -43 C be in F? I will have to do a search.

i was looking at the brownie recipes last night but i am affraid to make them. chocolate is very evil to my system and i'm wondering if i make the special ibs safe brownies if they will actually be safe for me. isn't there still caffeine in the cocoa powder? won't that still cause problems? maybe i should make them on a day i don;t have to go anywhere and see if they kill me. i miss chocolate.

might have to go on a treck to the health food store and get some. any brand in particular? possible we don not have certain brand in canada but i know that some items are good in one brand and terrible in another ie: soy milk. i might have to pick up some of bevrs fav. pizza..hehe since it seems she raves about it. wanted to try carob but i have a feeling its awful..

Kandee's suggestion of the tuna reminded me of the tuna-in-a-pouch. It's REAL portable -- and it's a LOT better than the canned stuff, much fresher (although a little more costly -- but worth it).

Yes, but very little. There are other substances in coffee that are extreme triggers and that's why we need to avoid it. Decaf tea can be tolerated by many even though there is still a tiny bit of caffeine in it. If I can find my chart I will post it and you can see that the small amount shouldn't cause you any harm. Unless you are actually allergic to chocolate the cocoa won't bother you. It is likey the FAT in the chocolate is the real culprit. It would be like eating a greasy snack....ug............and maybe as you know that is a trigger for sure. Another thing...many with IBS are fructose sensitive and a lot of products use HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) which can be a trigger. (For me, it's like an instant trigger!!!)..Then there is just fructose or corn syrup which may trigger some folks and not others. Want to test the cocoa without actually making the brownies? Eat something that is high in soluble fiber first...like a piece of toast or rice cake...Make a hot cocoa using 2 parts sugar to one part pure cocoa and just hot water. Drink it and see what happens. Or, my favorite, the Giradelli double chocolate hot cocoa mix powder. It uses sugar. You could put it in your rice or soy beverage, which ever you tolerate best or just use with hot water if you need to cut calories.................Hope this helps, I'm SOOOO sensitive to so many things that I never used to be..............but cocoa is NOT one of them, (and for most on this board) THANK goodness!!!! Honest, I want a cocoa fix, daily!!!

I know 32F is freezing.. and 0C is freezing. So I believe you just add 32 to whatever C degrees you have. I may be wrong on this, though.

i'll give it a try. first i have to actually buy some cocoa. was reading up on it on the internet and says that most had 0.1-0.5% caffeine and that the powder made from well fermented african cocoa beans can have less than 0.1% wonder if the label would say anything about its origin? i'll check next time i'm out. might check the health food store today when i check on those soy pizza's and fake cream cheese

Don't get wrapped up in all you read. For us here, the plain old Hershey's cocoa in the dark brown rectangular box does just fine. I've bought, I think, every cocoa out there on the market...Not much difference except that, in the long run, I am partial to Giradelli's for drinking, and Hershey for baking.

This is a pretty close way to convert celcius to fahrenheit: Take the celcius temperature, double it, then add 30. So, for example, if the temperature up in Canada is 2 degrees celcius, here in the States, in REAL temperature , it's 34 degrees fahrenheit!

Hi - Solid chocolate is a trigger for IBS because it's so high in fat, and it often has dairy in it. Cocoa powder (unsweetened baking cocoa powder, like Hershey's) has had the fat removed. And, in chocolate, the caffeine is tied to the fat, so when you remove one you automatically remove the other. Plain cocoa powder will also be just cocoa - no dairy or anything else added.
Have no fear - odds are you'll do just fine with the recipes made with cocoa powder.

just bought some cocoa powder on the way home from class and am going to give cocoa and sugar hot chocolate thing a try when i get home from work so i have recovery time if i need it. thanks for the information heather your book has been a lifesaver.

i bought some of that exact stuff on the way home today. i stuck my finger in and doesn't taste too bad. would be good on a bagel with a little tad of jam on top..mmm also got bevr's famous amy's pizza. it was tasty but i had to add a lot of stuff to it, mushrooms, parsley, and tons more soy cheese. i think i prefer the homemade pita pizzas that i make though wayyy less fat. and doesn't take that long to prepare even for me.

Actually I'm not much of a pepperoni fan, but I love mushrooms, so usually put a few of those on. I was going to have one tonight, but stupidly ate some pureed vegetable soup without a soluble fiber, and am paying for it tonight! Joan

Tofutti also makes a veggie cream cheese that would be really good with bagels, but is also good on warmed tortillas; in fact my 2 year old just stole mine and is sucking out all the Tofutti.
