Hi All
This week has been a nightmare for me. At the weekend I had a cold brought on by allergic reaction to the glue I was using to do my fiberglass nails and then Sunday night right up to today I've been really suffering with extream period pains.
I saw my doc about this at the beginning of the year as I was worried it was endrometreosis but had a proper examination and found it was my IBS making my periods a lot worse.
I've been taking pain killers all week (which I dont like) and today I have run out so am sitting it out, its not as bad as it was yesterday but still really uncomfortable and I feel so tired.

Does anyone else here suffer majorly with their periods because of their IBS???

What can I do to lessen the pain??
It's boiling hot here in the UK so the hot water bottle idea is no good, I have been using it a few times but Im just too hot.
I just had a hot bath but now I just feel drained of energy and again too hot.

What can I do???

I used to get wicked period pains, especially in my back and down my right leg. I took prescribed motrin and elevated my legs or tried to walk it out. After a couple sonograms they found I had fibroid tumors which is what causes most of the pain. I started taking BC pills for the first time in 20 years and the pain is minimal (still there and I feel it but not nearly as bad). Other than getting D during my period (I'm C the rest of the time) I did not notice any connection. I do know that if I give into major chocolate cravings I have more pain. I hope you get relief soon. I would go back to my gynocologist and have more tests done. Period pain shouldn't last 5 days or more unless there is another reason for it.

Tammy

Hi Niki,

You mentioned you saw your doc and had a proper examination to make sure it wasn't endometriosis, did they do a laparoscopy? Because that's really the only way to tell. It's possible you could have both, I have endo and my pain is always way worse with my periods, and I get more bowel pain with my periods as well.

Take care,
Kelly

Hi
I know its my IBS because the pains are gassy pains, sometimes relieved when I go to the toilet, I suffer with gas and bloating majorly, more than any other syptoms of IBS.
I've been looking at Heathers shop and am wondering if taking either the peppermint caps and/or the acacia would help???

I've found the peppermint caps to help a bit with cramps, though they help more with just preventing any IBS-related problems from the cramps. The Acacia works well too - I always increase that right before my period and make sure I'm taking it before every meal.

Yoga is what's helped me the most - if I start missing classes, I get absolutely slammed with cramps.

Personally, I haven't tried the caps or the acacia yet , although I plan to in the near future. I would definitely recommend fennel tea though for gas and bloating. It really helps me a lot

Take care!

Hey...I feel your pain. I've had all the endometriosis tests too, to no avail. It's gotta be the IBS.

Two suggestions, though: 1. if you are on the birth control pill, you might consider going off. I found that my periods were actually less painful when I went off the pill, and I didn't have as much IBS trouble. 2. If you aren't on the pill or going off the pill isn't a good idea, you might try the new Seasonale pill. I just started that and you only have 4 periods a year, which means I only have to have miserable periods 4 times instead of 12.

Just some suggestions from someone who has been there.
