We need a new name for Irritable Bowel, a more medical term!

I went to a reception last night and of course had to explain why I couldn't have the coffee or cake they served. I'm pretty open about my condition and people are curious, but the name Irritable Bowel Syndrome just doesn't give credibility to the illness. When you have Colitis, or Chrons, you get instant credibility because they sound like diseases. Irritable Bowel is just so benign that it actually seems as if you have some minor inconvenience
and are making something out of nothing. I wonder how we'd go about changing the name and what it could be.......lol. Let's have some fun and come up with a more fitting name.
Maybe something like Spasmitis.....or ?????????

I totally agree. Too tired to brainstorm right now but will have fun thinking on it later and get back to you.

I completely agree as well -- I actually do my best to avoid using "Irritable Bowel" for the very reasons that you describe. I usually end up giving a more technical answer -- endorphins, nerve receptors, etc. It tends to get much less of a blank stare than just saying IBS.

FORGIVE ME FOR SAYING THIS--BUT I THINK IT IS SO RIDICULOUS TO WANT TO CHANGE THE NAME JUST BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE ARE TOO INSENSITIVE OR TOO DEMSE TO REALKOIZE THAT WHAT YOU HAVE IS REAL! WE ALL KNOW IBS IS VERY MUCH REAL. don'worry about what other people say or thinl just do what is right for you.

again, don't waste your time on such a useless pursiut as chsnging the ibs name, but, instead, concentrate on what you all can do for yourselves to feel better. Thatr should be your main goal.

LOL what fun! I should start telling people I have a soluble fiber dependancy!

I couldn't eat some things this weekend, and a woman asked me why. When I said Irritable Bowel, she actually asked me if that was a real condition. I did take the opportunity to educate her.

You know, this isn't the first time this topic has come up. I could try to think of a funny name, but as I recall, our glamorous board moderator had the best name - web page. (Sorry Mags, I loved this so much, I had to share!)

A real condition???? LOL, that's exactly what the problem with the terminology is. As Rodney Dangerfield states, loosely, is that he doesn't get any respect. I think we all get that kind of response from people who don't understand. Even after I explain it to them, they still give me a blank (oh yeah, right) stare......k

Louise - Maybe you should try it--not for them, for you! 1. It makes you think creatively--good exercise for the brain which they say may help prevent Alzheimer's; 2. Some can be kind of funny, which makes you laugh or smile, which in turn helps boost your immune system; and 3. It's a good way to kind of "vent"--and we all know how good that feels!

So, you see, in a way, it's kind of healthy!

Amen Mags! I agree. Maybe we could come up with a cute term where the first letters of each word would spell out a word instead of IBS. Not to offend anyone, but maybe the letters C R A P could be turned into words for a term? Maybe Constant Running At Potty?

I think it would be fun to play around ideas on changing the name of IBS. Although - I think I would have to vote for the Bitchy Bowel term. Priceless.

Louise, everyone is just having alittle fun. We all realize how important it is for us to get better, but we are still allowed to joke around!

Okay, I can't decide between Bitchy Bowel (which captures the feeling perfectly) and spasmitis (which has me laughing out loud).

On a bad day I might tell people I have both - let them try and figure it out.

If you want you can always say you have food allergies and not explain anything at all.

Hi everyone,

I have just loged on and seen your emails... I think it is great if we try and come up with another name for IBS and stop getting those blank looks...

I remember when I was first diagnosed my dad called it Irrational Bitch Syndrome.. It still makes me laugh....

I do have to say I like Bitchy Bowel..

for all you out there who insist on changing the ibs. name. There is a saying; A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME STILL SMELLS THE SAME by the same token ibs by any other name will still have the same problems. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!

This board is the best!
I could have used it and all of you 20 years ago!
Problems with my stomach would have been more bearable and I would not have felt soooooooo alone. I so know about those blank stares and I've used the food allergy explanation many times. But you all have me rethinking and having some fun coming up with new name.
Love Bitchy Bowel.

Hey - I had to share this with you guys. This morning I had a minor D attack (nothing unusual - just my usual last day of my period finale ) Anyway, because of this, as I was washing my hands after my second go round, I started thinking about how I was starting to run late, and I needed to hurry, but my tummy wasn't cooperating with me and I literally said out loud, "Crap!", and right after I said it, I thought of this thread on the boards and just started cracking up. That made me feel a little better!

Just had to share that.....
