I am scheduled to visit a specialist tomorrow to see about my IBS. I have been following the Eating for IBS plan and my symptoms are nearly gone. I have gas, but that is something I live with. I am so grateful, my question is should I go to the specialist and risk tons of medical bills if the diet is working? If I had issues with something physical wrong with me you would think I would hurt all the time right? I have had blood tests and everything is good and based on my medical histroy the doc says I have IBS.

just wondering... have you had an endoscopy or colonoscopy to rule out any other nasties? I think it's good to do this to put your mind completely at rest.

If you have and you're sure you have IBS and are having with the way you are managing it then I'd forego the bills.

Good Luck
Kerrie

I agree with Kerrie,
Its best to rule out other disease like Crohns, Ulcerative Colitis, pancreas, gallbladder, ect. If all of them are ruled are, then you can confidently say you have IBS.

I haven't had either of those done. All my doctors think that I am ok. They have done the tests for all bacteria and so forth. I am just afraid that I won't be able to pay the medical bills if I go and have those tests done and nothing is wrong. I learned from when the doctors thought that I had PCOS they did a battery of tests and everything was fine and it turned out I ended spending to much on medical bills, same thing when they thought I had tons of blood work done, cost me so much.

I am going on the faith I have in God that I have to had IBS. Logic just tells me that if there were something physically wrong with me even the IBS diet would make me sick and cause me to have the same symptoms. It just makes sense to me at least through all the research I've done.

Heather what do you think?

Hi - There's some good info for you from a past post about tests and criteria for diagnosing IBS. Check here web page

If your symptoms match IBS, you may want to ask your doc about just having bloodwork as an initial check for inflammatory bowel diseases and celiac. If the bloodwork comes back negative there might be no reason for further tests.

Best,
Heather

Dear Jenny,

I agree with Kerrie about having tests to rule out anything "yucky". Regarding the cost, I noticed your address - how close are you to Lexington? On the map, it looks like about a 2-hour drive? Reason I ask, UK has a couple of clinics that might provide lower-cost testing and/ or treatment: one for IBD (like colitis, Crohn's, etc) and one for Women's GI Issues. This is just FYI - hope I'm not being too forward. Whether or not you are interested in actually going to UK med ctr, you might get some info from them. I've found, in dealing with critical health issues for my family over the past 20 years, that academic docs (and their clinical nurses, in particular) tend to be very empathetic, and generous with their information. You might be able to contact the Gastro division at UK and just ask to talk with a nurse (some academic med ctrs have intake nurses). S/he might be able to give you some helpful advice (and they don't "pressure" you to become a patient). Again, just FYI, their phone number is 859-323-5575. You can go to their web page at www.mc.uky.edu/gastroenterology/archive/index.htm. (You'll probably have to type it into the URL line - I don't think you can just click on it from here - it will just take you to the UK Med Ctr home page). Really, really, really hope I'm not being pushy or offering info you don't want. BTW, I checked out your home page and it's awesome! I loved your testimony (I have one, too!) and have bookmarked it! Keep your faith, pray about this and "let the peace of God rule in your heart."

Blessings,
Kaybee C

Just wondered how you're feeling and if you decided to keep the appointment? If you did, was the specialist helpful? I know it's discouraging to spend money for doctor visits that don't really give much information. Hope you're doing well.

Blessings,
Kaybee C
