IBS-Cs - what am I doing wrong!

I have been on Heather's diet for a couple of weeks and I am really constipated. (have been all my life so no big suprise there). I just feel that eating the sourdough bread at the beginning of a meal may not be working for me. I do eat veggies but I really miss the fruit (slightly tired of apple sauce).

Yesterday, I broke down and just ate a fruit salad for lunch followed by a small glass of prune juice. It cleared up the problem but after the bm I just felt kind of nausious and could only eat bland foods since. Also seem to have developed indigestion ( that is new ).

Maybe I should eat brown bread instead of the sourdough. I am taking citrucel and drinking loads of water and peppermint tea.

Could some IBS-Cs give me some help, maybe a sample diet or even how much carbs they eat with each meal.

Thanks.

Sounds like you're avoiding insoluble fiber... new

instead of carefully incorporating it. There's info about that here
Gotta eat that soluble fiber - here's how!

Too much soluble fiber---and not enough insoluble? Maybe that's the problem/ That's what I did when I first started following Heather's guidelines. I was afraid to eat any insoluble fiber. The soluble fiber alone made my C worse! You gotta have the cooked vegetables or pureed fruits to go along with your meals. Just make sure you have them with the bread, rice or potatoes. It's gotta be a combination of the two---to get things moving, if you know what I mean.

Exactly! Keep that soluble fiber, and use it to safely add insoluble! -nt- new

I'm not a C, never have been. I am SOOOO a D. Big time. However, I think I can help you a little.

That fruit salad you had worked for you, so that tells me your body needs fruit. What if you had the soluble fiber BEFORE you ate the fruit, which is what we're supposed to do anyway? The prune juice is really pulling out the BIG GUNS; you're brave! I wouldn't dare go near it with a 10-foot pole! But I'm a D, not a C.

Something I dearly love but have to go easy on because it makes me poop -- is blueberries. What if you had a rice cake or a slice of sourdough bread, followed by a nice bowl of fresh blueberries? Oooooh, baby!

Yeah, the indigestion. I get that too. It's just one of the many joys of IBS. It goes away though, so I ain't complainin'. If yours does not, see your doctor. One of the gals here had it real bad; turns out she had worse gastritis than IBS.

Also, you can incorporate some veggies into your diet by making homemade soup. If you don't want to make your own stock (I love making stock; keep a large supply on hand in my freezer at all times), you can buy canned. Then you just chop up your favorite veggies and toss into the stock. Bingo, you have poopin' food. But have that French bread beforehand, don't forget!

Bev

P.S.: Can you tolerate whole wheat? While most IBS-ers can't, I'm one of the fortunate few who can, so I use it instead of white flour; my bread of choice then is whole wheat. It helps keep me regular (as if I need more help).

I had the same problem...and I have one word MIRALAX. It has totally changed my life. Try the diet alone first, but my C was so bad, that I had to eat tons of insoluble fiber on the diet (like bran cereal) to get my body to go but it was making my stomach then ache and bloat. The Miralax is really great and I go every day now. With no sitting there waiting.

"The Rx Laxative

MiraLax is a tasteless, gritless prescription laxative. Just add a heaping tablespoon (17g) of MiraLax powder to your choice of 8 ounces of water, juice, soda, coffee or tea."

What is MiraLax™ (polyethylene glycol 3350, NF powder for solution)?
MiraLax is a prescription only laxative which has been prescribed by your doctor to treat constipation. This product should only be used by the person for whom it was prescribed.

How do I take MiraLax?
The recommended daily dosage of MiraLax is 17 grams of powder or as directed by a physician. For your convenience, the cap on each bottle is marked with a measuring line and may be used to measure a single dose of MiraLax (about 1 heaping tablespoon). MiraLax should be dissolved in approximately 8 ounces of water, juice, soda, coffee or tea.

What does MiraLax taste like?
When mixed with water, juice, soda, coffee or tea, MiraLax has no discernible taste.

When do I take it?
MiraLax can be taken at any time. It is suggested that you take it first thing in the morning. It can be taken on a full or empty stomach.

Do I need to refrigerate MiraLax?
MiraLax can be stored at room temperature until you mix it for use.

How long will it take to work?
A successful treatment program requires time and effort. Constipation doesn't occur overnight and relief takes time. After beginning MiraLax treatment, a bowel movement can usually be expected within 2 to 4 days.

Are there side effects?
Nausea, abdominal bloating, cramps and flatulence may occur. High doses may produce diarrhea and excessive stool frequency, particularly in elderly nursing home patients.

For how many consecutive days can MiraLax be used?
This product should be used for 2 weeks or less or as directed by a physician.

MiraLax is indicated for the treatment of occasional constipation. This product should be used for 2 weeks or less or as directed by physician. Most common adverse events are nausea, abdominal bloating, cramping, and flatulence. MiraLax is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected bowel obstruction and allergic to polyethylene glycol. Warnings: Symptoms suggestive of bowel obstruction should be ruled out before initiating MiraLax therapy. Precautions: Patients should be evaluated for bowel obstruction or metabolic disorders. Prolonged, frequent or excessive use of MiraLax may result in electrolyte imbalance and dependence on laxatives.

PTILLEN - MIRALAX IS A PRESCRIPTION LAXATIVE. IF YOU TAKE IT REGULARLY YOUR BOWELS *WILL* BECOME DEPENDANT ON IT AND YOU WILL NEED TO USE IT TO GO. HOWEVER, FOR SOME PEOPLE THIS IS WHAT WORKS, BUT THEY ARE COMPLETELY RELIANT ON IT HOWEVER IF CONSTIPATION IS SEVERE THIS IS BETTER THAN SUFFERING.

Thanks for all the information. Very useful. Of course I know about the addictive nature of laxatives; shucks, I was hoping this was some sort of natural remedy I didn't yet know about.

Hi! I am an IBS Cer as well. I have also tried Miralax and although it did make me go the next day, I found that it irritated my stomach (so good because I had a bm but bad because I had pain). Luckily, I am able to tolerate wheat/whole wheat bread and so I try to eat that instead of the white bread because although it helps with the pain, it does not help with the bm. I find that for me, drinking plenty of water/peppermint tea, etc. all day and having my veggies and fruit are key in order for me to go. If I do not do all of these things on a given day, I can pretty much guarantee that I will not go the next day at all. Here is a sample menu of my typical day:

7:30am-Breakfast: glass of water (not cold), soluble fiber supplement (Fibercon--storebrand version), Multi-Vitamin (Whole Foods, no additives, all natural)
Organic oatmeal made with soymilk OR bowl of Barbara's Puffins with soymilk, OR Cream of Wheat made with soymilk, OR Wheat toast with seedless jam (eg Apricot) and hot chocolate (made with real cocoa w/out sugar and vanilla soymilk).

11am-Snack: Few fatfree saltines or organic Pretzels (Trader Joe's) and SFS

1pm-Lunch-SFS, pep. pill-in this order (very important!): Baked Sweet Potato w/out skin (Whole Foods-organic-tastes better), steamed carrots with smidgen of olive oil, cooked spinach, Cornbread (IBS recipe)
OR
Risotto made with brown rice, onions, tomatoes and olive oil (doesn't bother me), 1/2 Whole wheat pita (Trader Joe's--doesn't bother me), green beans, Apple-Cinnamon rice cakes
OR
Beets, sourdough roll, Oven-Roasted Turkey (organic), cooked broccoli, Will's Rice Pudding (IBS recipe)

3pm-SFS, Fatfree saltines

6pm-Fruit Smoothie (banana, mango, blueberries)

If I follow that guideline everyday, give or take a few changes/recipes, I am pretty much guaranteed that I will have a bm (I sit every morning for 10-15 mins with a book, about 15 mins after breakfast). If I go, great, if not, I get up after the alloted time (bring a watch) and go about your day and eat everything right. Again, it's very important that we IBS Cers drink lots of water to get things moving as we have slow motility (not cold! to avoid pain) and make sure to get that insoluble fiber in there however you feel you can tolerate it. I would also suggest drinking plenty of peppermint tea, particularly after a meal. And don't drink too much of anything during a meal. Try to go for a walk, or to at least be active after you eat anything, don't just sit there. And try to be positive (sounds obvious and silly, but when I'm in a crappy mood either because of the IBS or something else, I can safely say that the pain will come back/continue, etc.)
Good luck!
