Hi Robyn,

I would suggest looking in the Research Library board for more information about what you are looking for. Heather usually puts any and all articles she finds in there.

in the IBS Research library. In a nutshell, IBS is a brain-gut dysfunction. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in the nervous system functions of the gut and brain, and it is implicated in IBS. It's not the only element at play, though. And the actual underlying reason that would cause the brain-gut dysfunction of IBS in the first place still has not been identified. There are factors known, like experiencing an insult to the gut, but not all IBS folks had this happen to them.

Basically, researchers are starting to learn what causes IBS symptoms to arise, but they don't yet know why. It's a pretty complicated disorder, and there's no reason to think that a flat-out cure is anywhere in the near future.

Please check the IBS entry in the IBS Glossary for very thorough information about causes, research, the brain gut disorder, serotonin, and more. And then check the IBS Research Library under both the general bowel dysfunction and brain-gut sections.
