Hi Robyn - I posted a reply to you in your other thread about all this. The molecular defect they just identified is new, but it's just one in a long list of discoveries about serotonin and IBS. It's good news, but not something that will lead to a cure tomorrow (or, according to some of the top researchers, ever).

IBS is NOT caused by food sensitivities, or stress. It is a brain-gut dysfunction, and no one knows what causes that. Foods and stress are triggers - they can absolutely make you worse, so managing your diet and stress is a great way to keep symptoms at bay.

I'm not sure why you've suddenly been able to change your diet. For some folks IBS kind of comes and goes across the years, and so does their need to manage their diet, stress, climate they live in, exercise, etc. I'm glad to hear you're feeling better!

Prevention. I also told you how I listen to classical ocean music at night and play all night till the morning. Most importantly I make sure everything is not a drama. I was raised in a home where everything was worried about and had a reaction. I had to change the patterns that I had learned. It took awhile but I was able to learn to relax more and laugh at things.
They say laughter is the only free medication.

I would try that listening to classical music at night, but I think my husband would kill me Maybe I'll try it when he works a night shift.
I bring on my own stress, I take on way too much and I have trouble saying 'no' to people. I know I need to change that, and I am working on it!

I have a discman and I listen to that when i'm away so I don't bother anyone. At home I don't play it loud. I just have it quiet.

You will feel better once you stand up for yourself. I used to be like that and it was horrible. When you can you will feel so much better. It's a hard first step and for saying no to people think if these people would do the same and remember if you want to say no to something it's the people around you that will support you.
