Wow! This is a very exciting discovery... It'll be interesting to see what it leads to! It totally makes sense, though. I think we all know that our bodies obviously react differently to stress and whatnot than the average person's, so it really validates that.

This is really good news. Unfortunately it may take a while to get things figured out, but it's nice to know that there may be a lead. I sent it to my cousin in med school so hopefulyl she'll pass it along to some of her collegues.

God me too Robyn!!! Just wondering though, is this supposed to be for all types of IBS (C, D, A?) as in one drug for all?!

Robyn,

Zelnorm affects seratonin in the gut and is used for IBS. Also, doctors prescribe low doses or paxil and other SRRI's for IBS sufferes. Confusingly enough (LOL) low seratonin levels in the your gut vs. low seratonin levels in the brain have not been proven to be related, as they are produced in different parts of the body. In other words, they are related, but the seratonin in the gut is regulated and produced differently than the seratonin in the brain. Also, I think that in many cases, the IBS causes the depression, and not visa vera. I hope that you found this info. interesting... and that it is somewhat correct. This medical stuff is tricky...

Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but I'm pretty sure that Heather says something very similar in one of her books....? I certainly already knew most of that .

Ah well, now the Times is taking notice, maybe the money people will too!

Yeah, but the brain processes it differently than the gut. I think that's what Shanna was talking about.

And SSRIs work by inhibiting to reuptake of serotonin in the brain, thereby rasing serotonin levels in the brain. It isn't just a serotonin shortage in the gut that causes IBS, but that your body doesn't process it properly.

Dunno how they worked out the 50%. That is a rather dodgy sounding statistic! I do think it's genetic though - but it'll be years and years before they get round to isolating the gene and then even longer before they can (or are allowed to) modify it.

I kept wondering too, why everyone was getting so excited. All it basically says is there is a serotonin link, and we've known about that for a long time. What else is there but a low dose anti-depressant in that case? I doubt seriously if we see anything NEW, really new, come of this.

They have drugs that help with that----they're called anti-depressants. Why so many people that have IBS are afraid to take them beats me! If they renamed them and marketed them as an IBS drug, IBS'ers would be flocking to the doctor for them!

This general info has been around for several years - it's just a new study finding in a field that's been heavily researched for a bit now. But....Novartis pharmaceuticals sponsored this research, and they sent out a press release about it (I got it), with promo info for Zelnorm. Some news sources picked up the release, though most of them deleted the Zelnorm marketing tie-in.

Not really news after all, just a marketing attempt by Novartis for their drug.
