Ew ... what a gross topic for a post, sorry. I have a prescription for Hyoscyamine that I don't take very often because it tends to make me drowsy. Well I felt some bad cramping coming on today and I took one, and it worked great. But, I've also been having to pee like every 20 minutes. Lately I have been trying to drink a lot of water, but I haven't had SO much today that I should have to go this often. I don't have any pain or anything else to make me think it's a UTI, so I'm just wondering if anyone on Hyoscyamine has experienced anything similar. It's like every time I stand up to walk across the room, I get the urge to pee. Help!

I read that someone had a similar reaction to another drug, but it wasn't Hyoscyamine. Quite a storm we are having right now! I can't believe it's this dark at 4!

Drs. Wolfe & Hope, in their book "Worst Pills, Best Pills II" (Public Citizen's Health Research Group, 1993), say this about Hyoscyamine:

(Quote):

"Warning: Special Mental and Physical Adverse Effects. Older adults are especially sensitive to the harmful anticholinergic effects of a family of drugs called belladonna alkaloids. Atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine are all in this family. Drugs in this family should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Mental Effects; confusion, delirium, short-term memory problems, disorientation, and impaired attention. Physical Effects: dry mouth, constipuation, DIFFICULTY URINATING . . . blurred vision, decreased sweating with increased body temperature, sexual dysfunction, and worsening of glaucoma."

(Unquote) (Emphasis added.)

It's good that you don't take this on a regular basis, obviously. Have you considered Heather's peppermint caps as an antispasmodic instead of the Hyoscyamine? If peppermint doesn't give you indigestion, I'd go for it!

Nope, not loosing it............When I take ANY antispasmodic they make me like that. I was beginning to think I was getting really old before my time........with such a weak bladder I'd have to start wearing Depends... LOL, but the minute I stopped them on a regular basis all that went away. Don't get me wrong, I love my Bentyl and Donatol, they took the cramps right away and I could almost eat like a normal person. But the anti's don't like me, so they won't be taken unless I'm absolutely desperate!!!

I take probably one (and sometimes more) Hyoscyamine sublingual tablet every day (every time I feel the onset of an attack) as recommended per my gastro's suggestion. I haven't had the sleepiness side effect, but I do need to pee a lot. However, I am drowning myself with water, and my frequency is much less than the 20 minutes you describe. (In other words, I hadn't noticed a problem with frequent urination.) Sorry...
