I wish I knew why we have IBS and why doctors don't give us any advice! All I can say is give this diet a try! It my be hard at first but eventually you will figure out what make your tummy feel bad and what makes it feel food. It will also take some time. For example, I figured out that all wheat products make me feel kinda nasty and now I just don't eat them and I feel a lot better. It's all about trial and error I guess. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

I can't believe doctors! How can he just leave you like this? Amazing! Call him back and ask him if it's IBS. "All in your head," eh? Damn that makes me mad! I wonder if it would be all in HIS head if he was doubled over the toilet with stabbing cramps, pooping his butt off while puking at the same time!? It's not the HEAD where it all is!

Your so-called doctor is paid to help you; make him do his job. Demand a diagnosis. "All in your head" is not a diagnosis.

Hi gabe,
I spent 10 months trying to find a doctor who finally knew what was wrong with me. Because my pain also was accompanied by waking up almost every hour to pee at nite, I was sent to a urologist. He never mentioned IBS, and told me it was stress.. His quote "some women cry with their bladder.." Pleeezzze! Find another doctor, and meanwhile try the IBS diet. In one week of eating the safe soluable fiber foods and following Heather's advice, my pain stopped and I was able to get off most of the medication (almost there..) and I'm slowly sleeping more at nite. Don't give up .. and maybe if your current Dr is male try finding a female doctor. Not meaning to be sexist but she was the one who explained everything to me and pointed me to IBS as a possible cause.

Doctor's piss me right off! I have suffered with IBS forever and no doctor has ever helped me. They say it's all in your head and eat fibre, yea right. My friend's husband told me the other day it's all in your head (he had been given a pamphlet on IBS and that's what it said. I managed to control my temper. BUT since then he has been sick in bed and the best I could do was to suggest that I send him a pamphlet saying it's all in HIS head. now has nasty is that! Not my normal self, but it shows how fed up I am with the medical profession. About three weeks ago I paid big bucks and drove to Toronto to see a naturopath. They put me on their miracle diet, fruits, vegys, fibre. This was supposed to help me lose weight. O.k. but I told her I have IBS. Oh we help people with IBS all the time, she said! My butt, their diet put me into a complete tailspin. I am just recovering now with Heather's book. You would think a naturopath would know a thing or two about IBS! Guess not, just wanted my money.

I can't remember what I was replying to now, oh well, take care everybody. I have to report that I have been doing this now for a week and a half and I feel soooooooooo much better! Thanks everyone.

Neeta.

i'm so sorry your doctor sucks. and that's what it boils down to...

ok, you had a colonoscopy. it didn't show anything. you're still having your symptoms, right? and you're not a nutcase who imagines diseases and pretends to have diarrhea/constipation for fun and/or attention, right? so move on. he's an a**hole. i wouldn't even bother making him give you a diagnosis, if i were you. he's already shown he's a moron. we don't imagine these things. going to a shrink may help us deal with stress and childhood issues and so forth... but it's not going to stop the diarrhea, now is it?

you need to go to a different doctor. did your regular doc recommend him or did you get the name from insurance or through a friend? go back to your regular doc and tell him it's not in your head, you find the diagnosis unacceptable, and you want a referral to someone else! now! if you don't have a normal regular GP type doc, call your OB-GYN or call the local hospital (the good one!) and call around. ask the staff if the doc treats IBS patients. then make an appointment and hope for the best. repeat as needed 'til you feel like you've been heard.

meanwhile, try the diet here and see if it helps. even if you don't have IBS, it's not going to hurt you- it's a nice balanced diet! try it. if it works, then at least you're making progress despite what that moron said. and if dietary changes and adding soluble fiber supplements change your symptoms, guess it wasn't in your head after all, now was it..........?

whadda jerk.

Another crummy incapable doctor. All in our heads everyone! Nothing "visably" wrong is not the same as nothing physically wrong. This makes me so mad I could spit! Get Heather's book and hang out here. You'll get more good suggestions from here than anywhere. Did they do any other tests for you to rule other things out?

Here's all the medical info about what IBS is and is not All about Irritable Bowel Syndrome. As you'll see, IBS is most definitely NOT all in your head - it's a dysfunction of your gut's nervous system. There is nothing structurally wrong with your GI tract, but there is absolutely something physically wrong with it. Your GI doc should know that, and tell you how to manage the disorder, and it's a crying shame that he didn't. I'm really sorry...

Most doctors just don't get IBS, because nothing really physical shows up on there tests, they think its all in our head!!!

See the post I just made answering a post about where the pain is. Unfortunately, I don't think there really are any answers for us as to why we have to suffer with this and there really aren't any "CURES" Heathers diet, exercise, the right fiber, water, etc are about the best things I have found. Please don't let it get you down too much, we KNOW its not in your head!
