I'm real jazzed up about this stuff. As you know, I just discovered that my cholesterol is too high; my doc wants to see me tomorrow to "chat" about it (he's gonna give me meds, I just know it!). Any-who.... yesterday I did a lot of research about cholesterol, and Heather helped me by turning me on to Dr. Dean Ornish who is an expert on women's heart health issues. Dr. Ornish STRONGLY recommends Flax Seed Oil, which my hubby immediately went out to buy for me and which I have already started taking. I thought you guys might be interested in the stuff as well because apparently it's "important for proper immune system development, DIGESTIVE SUPPORT, healthy brain function, and cardiovascular health."
Check this out: Flax Seed Oil Note that he says "Flax seed oil contains one of the richest sources of omega fatty acids, far more than fish oils."
BTW, this stuff is for women only. "... the jury is still out on the risks versus the benefits of flax seed oil for men. For women, however, flax seed oil does not appear to provide potential benefits without additional risk."

I get nervous everytime I hear "oil". Will the flax seed oil aggravate our IBS?

No! It's beneficial for us. As Heather said, "Fish fats are NOT at all the same as meat fats. There ton's of evidence showing that fatty fish, like salmon, can help prevent heart disease. . . . salmon, tuna, flax, soy, walnuts, avocados, olive oil - these should all help, not hurt."
See p. 122 of "The First Year": "Fatty fish such as tuna and salmon ... contain omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, which can have an inflammation-reducing effect on the colon." the flax seed oil capsules provide over 1,500mg. of these omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids per 2-capsule serving. They're "important for ... digestive support."
I SOOOO feel I'm on the right track here. Thanks, Heather!

Delia - Do you just by the Flax seed and mix it with your oatmeal??
What about other things we can mix in our yogurt and such??? Got any other ideas?
You can also get alot of Omega3 from certain organic eggs as well! Just make sure the box saids that it contains the Omega3, many do not.

It's funny that you bring this up. The other day I was talking to one of the other pilots and his gf is a dietitian. She has had stomach troubles before although he didn't really elaborate on them. He said that she swears by Flax seed flour (the milled up seeds, not whole seeds). That's something that I'm going to research more.

when you have flax oil (and this is also true for fatty fish) make sure you've got a soluble fiber basis. Even the beneficial fats are GI stimulants, so too much of them at once could trigger IBS problems.

.... Does that apply to the capsules as well? Because the recommended dosage is very high (1,500mg. per 2 capsule serving, 3 times a day) or 3-4 one gram capsules, as Dr. Ornish suggests.
The instructions on the bottle of capsules do state to take them with meals .....
I'm just so jazzed about this stuff; I can't wait to talk to the doc about it tomorrow.
THANKS, HEATHER!
