Hello:
I am a new member trying to help my husband deal with his IBS. Although I read Heather's book and the posts on the subject, I still have questions on the fiber supplements. The acacia sounds good, but does it come in capsules which would be so much easier to use "on the go"? Is it really necessary to take from 12-15 grams of supplemental soluble fiber in addition to the soluble fiber one gets from the diet? ( seems like alot). He is taking metamucil capsules right now..but to get that much fiber, he'd be popping pills all day. I'd be interested in what most of the folks who have been helped have used. Thanks so much!!

Hello there, I was taking Metamucil caps and was so sick of all those pills - and of course the side affects of gas and bloating from metamucil - I just couldn't handle it.

I have been taking Acacia for a few months and it's great. I would recommend starting really slow taking it but the only side affect I have had as been a little bloating but not the painful gassy kind - know what I mean? I have some in a zip loc bag with me and most places I go (work or to visit a friend) I can get to a glass and a spoon so and I just mix it up. You can get some Benefiber pills I think or Equilactin (on this website) and have those for times when you are on the go. I think depending on how much fiber you are getting from foods might affect how much of the supplement you want to take. Hmm not sure and I'm not the expert on how much to get per day but I am up to 2 Tbls of the Acacia throughout the day. It's tasteless so it's just like drinking water which is a big help to my stomach anyway.

Well I'm sure others on here will have some advice on their experiences. Not everyone had done well with Acacia and some prefer others so it might be a matter of what works best for your husband.

Hi - if you're taking the pills you're getting a much lower dosage of fiber than taking the powders. Most of the pills are only 1/2 gram fiber each, whereas you can get 4.5 grams of fiber in 1 tablespoon of Acacia. So, it's usually a lot easier to increase your dosage to a high enough amount to really stabilize your gut function using the powders.

Thanks Debbie and Heather. Heather, just a clarification as to the amount of soluble fiber supplement needed ( you recommend from 12-15 grams per day) , that is in addition to the soluble fiber obtained from the food eaten during the day, correct? I will order the acacia and have my husband try it.

Hi - yes, see if you can gradually work your way up to 12-15 grams of a soluble fiber supplement per day. This is in addition to the fiber (both soluble and insoluble) that you'll get from foods. The minimum daily fiber dosage, total, that is recommended is 25-35 grams, and you definitely want to aim for the higher end of that. Remember too that many cultures have a daily fiber intake of up to 60-80 grams, and they're simply the healthier for it.
