I am a very youthful 50 y/o woman who was recently been diagnosed with high cholestoral (Type 2A Hereditary), osteoporosis, and of course IBS. Also, I am lactose intolerant and have numerous environmental/food/medicine allergies and sensitivities. Other than these I am in fine health. I should also explain that my HDL is the problem, the triglycerides and the LDL are fine. After many years of suffering, I am doing well on Heather's IBS eating plan. I have had very few flairups (maybe once every other month) and only when I eat a diet no-no. Additionally, I recently lost my Dad to lymphoma and I was his health care adminsistrator. Although my doctor is concerned about my cholesterol, I believe that my problem is more stress related and manage to maintain an average blood pressure of 100/60. Yeah, I know, its low--it's a family thing. Everyone, including my adult children, have it, symptoms of IBS, and high cholesterol. I have recently begun working out again--walking, dancing, strength training--after a six-month hiatus. Until recently, I have had a hard time keeping weight on my body. I am 5' 5" tall, small-framed and weigh 115 lbs. I would love to get back to 125 but I do not think its going to happen. I am currently asking for food intake assistance (I really dislike the word diet)to remedy my health issues. I know this is long but I have to add that soy does not agree with me--need I say more.

If it helps... I use NutriBiotic Vegan Rice Protein in an attempt to add some weight back. The rice protein does not have any dairy or soy in it. I would use it more than once a day, if I could figure out some way of preserving whatever I mix it with [at work].
There is hardly any fiber in it, though. It is a straight 12g of protein. I mix it with my soluble fiber supplement, fruit, and some brown rice syrup for flavor. It tastes pretty darn good...
The key to gaining weight is resistance training and consuming more calories than you burn. The rule of thumb is: "Eat more. If you cannot, eat more."

Hi Gloworm, I can relate, and have only been able to stabilize my weight (at 102lbs) by eating more carbs. I have allergies too and have found muffins and pancakes to be the easiest to make without dairy, gluten or eggs. I bake a bunch and then freeze them so I've always got stuff on hand. I posted a quinoa pancake recipe on the recipe exchange board; if you do a search you should find it pretty quickly. Good luck! Laura

I like that. "Eat more. If you cannot, eat more." My problem is just the opposite. I can't LOSE weight! Whenever I see the doctor, he keeps telling me, "calories in, calories out." Okay, that being the case, then I would think it would work in reverse -- right? If you want to gain, "more calories in, less calories out."

I'm with you, Bev! I can't seem to lose weight either! I suppose the grass is always greener on the other side.
