Maybe the board can help me...

Are tangerines trouble if I have IBS-D? I love 'em, (peeled, then popped in my mouth, with the seeds spit in the trash) but I'm suspicious after eating one the other night.

What store sells fennel tea? I'm in Atlanta, and I looked for it at Publix and Whole Foods with no luck.

Does hypnosis work for IBS? When I was in college I hypnotized myself once with a tape, to stop biting my nails. (I'm just a ball of anxious energy all around). My nails didn't touch my teeth for another six months after that. So I'm open to it, but what can I expect it to do for my IBS? Will I be able to eat chicken wings after that (man I love chicken wings, but an hour later, it's payback time!).

Thanks for any help.

Here's just some guesses! the tangerines are insoluble fiber so I'd be careful with them i.e. eat them after soluble fiber. Or start by eating half of one after sol. fiber.

I'm surprised you didn't find fennel tea at whole foods I get mine there! Maybe try asking someone. It comes in a white box with blue and green lettering (can't remember the name)

I haven't done the hypnosis but thought about it. when I inquired everyone had positive reviews. I think it was mags who really responded well. But no I still don't think chicken wings are in your future! (maybe eventually who knows) sorry! Good luck!

Eat your tangerine after a good soluble fiber base, such as French bread or sourdough.

I get my fennel from Heather. It's much fresher -- and a lot milder than the tea bag stuff at the health food store. I mix it with Heather's peppermint, which is incredible, and brews into a nice cup of tea. And, by the way, Heather's fennel is a lot cheaper than the tea bags!

If you prefer the tea bags, look for Celestial Seasoning's "Tummy Mint" -- you can get it at the health food store, and it's the best tasting of all the other tea bags with fennel in them.

Hypnosis -- at least MICHAEL's hypnosis -- is incredible, so many of us got a lot better as a result of going through his program, and I am one of them. I finished his program last month and am going to do another program of his in 2 more months. Go to the website just to the left and check it out. Michael is a Godsend!

As for chicken wings, dark poultry meat and skin are triggers. If you can't tolerate them, try white chicken meat instead.

Good luck,
Bev

I agree with pretty much everything everyone else said.

As for the tea, I couldn't find any loose fennel (besides in the spice aisle and that was WAY too expensive to brew all the time!). I tried some boxed fennel. But, I really liked the Tummy Mint from Celestial. BUT, then I ordered Heather's when she started selling, and I like it much better.

The hypnosis worked great for me! There are still a few issues I'd wished it'd helped more, but for the most part it has changed my life. I'm probably going to try listening to them again soon.

As for the wings, they are a BIGTIME trigger. But, when my fiance orders them, I sometimes steal 1 or 2. I can't help it - my mouth is watering right now thinking about them! lol And, if I'm out somewhere and we're eating, then I'm feeling stable. So, that's why I get away with it. If you do try 1 or 2, do so at your own risk!

Thanks to each of you for your responses. As for the fennel tea, I'll keep an eye out for a white box with blue and green lettering at Whole Foods. I also was surprised I couldn't find it there. I may try Tummy Mint too.

It's too bad about the wings. But Bevrs thanks for the insight on dark vs. white meat. I'm going to try to notice that next time.

My heaviest trigger foods are wine (red & white--I don't touch it anymore), wings, almost any creamy sauce, and sadly, salads (something I've only recently realized with the help of this website).

I'm just now getting a handle on all this.

One thing that has helped for me is the soluble fiber supplements. I've been taking Metamucil (psyllium husk) but may have to change because of gas.

Another question I have is about taking fiber supplements (or even about consuming soluble fiber of any type before a meal to help stabilize your digestion). Is there any ideal time frame before you eat to take fiber supplements. In other words, if I swallow a fiber pill an hour before a meal, is that better than swallowing one five minutes before a meal?

Thanks again.

For my fennel tea, I just bought some loose fennel seed in the bulk herb section at Whole Foods and put about a tablespoonful in my 2 buck tea ball. Quite simple!

My husband found a recipe for fennel tea where you throw in a couple of cardamom pods (which I also found in the bulk spices) with the fennel. It's pretty tasty if you smash up the pods a bit.

Hi Daniel, and welcome! Try taking your soluble fiber right before you eat. That will really give your gut a buffer for your meal. There's no harm in (and plenty of benefits) to taking the supplement in between meals, but it will give you better stability with any meal if you have it right before. Make sure the foundation of your meal is soluble fiber foods as well, and that you're eating small meals and snacking on soluble fiber foods. The key is to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber at all times, so eat little amounts but often.

Whole Foods usually does have fennel, but my local store doesn't sell the organic variety, which I prefer for IBS (and which I swear tastes better). Not sure why yours wouldn't carry it at all. If you find organic bulk fennel, it should brew a cup of tea with 1 T that is very, very strong. If it's not that strong, you know the fennel is too old or not a high enough quality to be truly effective.

Do pay attention to the Metamucil and switch if it's causing you gas.

Some good news for you - there isn't a creamy sauce around that you can't make with soy/rice substitutes instead of dairy, and you'll be shocked at how delicious they are. Check the recipe board and index for tons of ideas here - from alfredo sauce to mushroom cream sauce to custards and more.

Wow, thanks Heather. I'm impressed that you took the time to chime in on my post. It shouldn't surprise me because everything about your website says that you're a giving soul. Thanks for your suggestions and I'll take them to heart. Daniel
