Hi, again. I was wondering if the following foods are safe to eat and how to eat them. Peanut butter, canned spaghetti sauce, salted and roasted sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds, roasted and salted soy nuts, chicken soup (my friend made me soem chicken soup with no salt added and a minimal amount of chopped celery, carrot, onion, and chicken breast). Or what about restaurant chocolate cake? I was thrilled to see angel food cake on the list of foods to eat when you can't eat anything, but is the pre-made store-bought packaged angel food cake safe to eat? Thanks for your help!

Hi Sommer! I don't have answers to all your questions, but here's what I do know:

Peanut butter is only safe in very small quantities because it's very high in fat! I have trouble with peanuts, but I believe many people here are okay with a small PBJ sandwich.

Canned spaghetti sauce is fine, although like any sauce it helps to sprinkle a little bit of sugar on it to cut the acidity, since that bothers many IBSers. Also make sure it's not too high in fat... I usually buy Ragu Light.

Soy nuts are one of the safest nuts, but are still nuts nonetheless, so are very high in fat. They're something you'll want to snack on sparingly!

Homemade chicken soup is fabulous! It's a great way to get your veggies and protein. Watch out for canned, though, which often contains weird ingredients like MSGs or chicken fat.

Restaurant chocolate cake is usually not safe, because it's almost always very high in fat and made with milk. I don't know much about angel food cake, but I'm pretty sure that's usually dairy-free, and that's why it's safe when most pre-made cakes aren't.

I hope that helps! I know how confusing this can be, so keep the questions coming!

I would stay away from the seeds and nuts. Restraunt cake is probably full of triggers! The soup sounds ok. Salt is fine to have, as long as there is no MSG in the soup you'll be fine. On the angel food cake, check the ingredients. The one at my store is safe, but you should still check or ask some one that works at the store for the ingridents!

Hope this helps some!

I'm really bummed and irritated, and dare I say it, really, really mad about this IBS thing. Yet, i have to count myself lucky that it's not gonna pass on to my children if i ever have any, and it won't lead to anything worse. I think i'm more angry at the fact that my kitchen was recently stocked with mostly no-no foods and I just want to scream and cry and throw something. I forgot to ask also, is margarine okay? I'm just sitting here sulking and complaining while I have to watch over a frozen pizza that's cooking in the oven for my hubby and i'm eating a plain yellow potato. Later today after i get some sleep and hubby get sleep, we're gonna go to the store to see what we can afford for me to start up on this IBS diet. 90% of the food we have right now is a big no-no or a eat very sparingly type food. I remember someone mentioning ginger ale is okay if i stir out the carbonation. Is this okay? Oh, another questionable food, how about candy? I've got this horrible sweet tooth. I read about anise tea, well what about black licorice which is made with anise? :P Are frozen green beans, brocolli, corn okay? What about canned carrots and peas? Any other foods that are good take-alongs that i can keep in my purse for flare-ups or to prevent an episode? Thank you all for your help!

We Need Heather's "The First Year" new

Sommer, you need to get Heather's "The First Year" and you need to read it. All these questions -- and MORE -- will be easily answered for you in her book.

The pizza was an issue for me as well. I LOVE PIZZA! This Board introduced me to Amy's frozen SOY CHEESE pizza. The only kind of Amy's pizza I could find at Safeway was the "no-cheese" pizza, so I bought it. YUK. Then the Board told me I misunderstood and needed to find Amy's SOY CHEESE kind. I had to drive down to the health food store, way out of town, but they had it -- and it turned out that it was well worth the long trip to get it. YUMMY! Now, whenever I go down there I always stock up on it. Hubby even wants my pizza -- it's really GOOD!

You have a sweet tooth? Excellent. Check out the recipes in the recipe board. There are some incredible dishes in there, magnificent cakes -- and of course our fave ADBs! I don't think there's anyone on this board who isn't addicted to the ADBs! Easy to make, and absolutely scruptuous.

Those frozen veggies are fine in a casserole or a soup. Why not buy some whole chickens on sale, whip up a nice soup stock, and throw those veggies in it? Yum. I posted my chicken stock recipe in the recipe board -- anything and everything tastes great with it. Veggies are fine, provided you chop, grind, pulverize, and cook them well first. Ditto with canned veggies.

Margarine is a fat. This eating program is very low in fat. You have to use it very sparingly. Also, margarine is high in the bad fat (hydrogenated). When you go down to the health food store, look for Soy Garden; it's a butter substitute that is totally NON-hydrogenated and tastes more like real butter than anything I've ever tried. It's still 100% fat, so you have to use it sparingly, but it's much, MUCH better for you than any margarine.

Do you like bagels? What about pretzels? I love pretzel rods. You can take those in your purse for emergencies. (Okay, so get yourself a big purse.)

Also, in that new big purse you should make up a little zipper bag of emergency supplies, such as your meds and a little Tummy Mint tea. Buy some Equalactin and put a little acacia in a Zip-Loc bag. You've got yourself a nice emergency medicine cabinet with you at all times.

In that medicine cabinet I keep peppermint Altoids. Excellent for tummy -- and satisfies that sweet tooth of yours!

I like Nature Valley granola bars, and I keep a little supply in my emergency medicine cabinet. They're a little higher in fat than they should be, so I share it with hubby.

There's no reason for you to be "sitting [t]here, sulking and complaining while [you] have to watch over a frozen pizza that's cooking in the oven for [your] hubby" because there are SOOOO many good things you could make for BOTH of you. My hubby loves everything I make, so I make ONLY IBS-safe foods. Okay, so initially I cleaned out my pantry of all fattening stuff -- but that's a good thing -- hubby actually helped me! You might be surprised, Girlfriend! (By the way, check out the recipe board for pizza -- yep, we make our own, and it's to die for!)

Good luck -- and get Heather's book; it'll help you A LOT.

Bev

Great advice. As soon as I get enough money, I'm going to buy heather's book for sure. I kind of already have a big purse, according to my friends, they all tease me about it. :P Until I get the money to buy more stuff I need, all I can do is read everything available on here. Tons and tons of info... You know, my hubby gained some weight recently and i told him how eating more water-soluable fiber would benefit him too with soem weight loss. He's actually okay with changing his diet with mine. He's lucky, he only suffers from teh occasional indigestion. WE have a little bit of money we can spend on a fiber supplement and some safe foods. I'm excited and can't wait until I can try the recipes. Hubby bought five quick pick lotto tickets. Cross fingers, maybe we'll win enough to really stock up and have a great IBS-safe kitchn. Yep, I'll do what i can do with the money we have now and when we have more money, i'll get more stuff. That's where most of the problem lies at them moment. Money...

Hey Sommer!

If money is an issue right now, why not borrow Heather's book(s) from your local library?

Darn, I think the IBS has really messed with my brain function (along with my brain function messing up my gut!) I just moved to Edmonton, Alberta Canada. I have no idea where the local library is. I guess I'll have to ask hubby and do research. Thanks tons!

LOL - Thanks for the compliment! If you go in MY Home and change your profile to include your location, it helps people to help you. For example, if you're looking for a doctor/meds/foods/etc, someone else from your area will be able to point you in the right direction.

Hope that helps! Good luck finding the library!

Hi Sommer, Don't freak out this IBS thing does get easier! It's like going back to school or something - you have to relearn how to eat. But once you do, this diet is very satisfying and you won't feel so deprived of foods you can't eat. And most importantly you will feel better! Most of the food you will be buying now is not any more expensive than the food you were already buying. So take your time reading this site and then maybe re-reading some things again and you'll get it. I found Heather's book to be sooo helpful and if you can find a library near you. Good luck and keep posting and don't spend any more time staring at pizza that's cooking!!

While we are on this topic I'd like to
know if it's safe to eat artichokes
and asparagas. I thought they were on the
no no list but then I saw some recipies
with them included.

Hi sugar! I know asparagas is mostly insoluble fiber, and I think artichokes are too. But the reason you saw them in recipes is probably because, like most other veggies, they're okay when they're fully cooked and with a soluble fiber base.

Hi Val,

See page 31 of "The First Year." Heather says, "Sulfur-containing foods (garlic, onions, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, asparagus, and Brussels sprouts), in addition to their high amounts of insoluble fiber, also produce significant gas in the GI tract and this can trigger attacks. As with all other fruits and veggies, however, these are extremely nutritious foods with significant health benefits, so they need to be treated with caution but definitely not eliminated from your diet."

I can't help you with artichokes; I can't stand them, so I never bothered noticing whether or not they were even mentioned.

See how I am?
