So what is the big benefit of using soy versus regular margarine? Is it the fat content per say? Just wondering since I cannot find soy dream anywhere...even at my local health food store and I live in the city.

Yes, the fat content and be sure your margine doesn't have any sort of dairy in it either!

Heather turned me on to Soy Garden "natural buttery spread." It's still 100% fat, so you have to use it sparingly as you would butter or margarine, but it's NON-HYDROGENATED fat -- no trans-fatty acids (the most harmful kind). It tastes more like butter than anything I've ever tasted, and it's great in cooking.
I don't know if Soy Dream makes a butter or margarine substitute. But you should be able to find Soy Garden at the health food store -- when I go, I stock up on it!

I read every label on the soy butters and marjarins in the store and every one of them has soy in it. I can't eat soy so I got a low fat butter. It's wipped and has less fat and a little goes a long way so I don't use much of it. I'm doing just fine with it. I'm certainly better with it than I was with the marjarins that had soy in them. They just killed me.

Did you try checking in your regular grocery store with the fruits & veggies? That's where they have Soy Garden at my local grocery stores. That is the logical place to stock it after all - the tub looks like it was just plucked off the tree and thrown on the shelf, right?

Yep, it has to do with the dairy. Personally, I use Fleischmann's unsalted margarine, which is lactose free, and it's never bothered me. But I think most people go with the soy, because the margarine still contains a small amount of whey.
UPDATE: I just checked my margarine, and it no longer says it contains whey! It now says "milk free" on the back instead of just lactose free! Does anyone know it that means it would be safe for everyone now?? The ingredients look safe to me!

Most margarines are hydrogenated, which means they have trans-fats, which are just as bad (if not worse) for your heart as saturated fats like butter and lard. Since the IBS diet is low fat, you want the fats that you do eat to be heart-healthy (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated). So for a butter replacement you'd want some type of non-hydrogenated plant oil, and Soy Garden or Spectrum Spread are the big winners in terms of taste. If there's a non-soy alternative that would be fine - what matters is that it's dairy free, and non-hydrogenated.
