Has anybody tried chewing a small amount of the fennel seeds in the tea bags? Supposedly, that's a very popular thing to do in India after a meal to promote digestion.

I think you're only supposed to do a very small amount like a 1/2 teaspoon.

Is it safe?

Yes, I have heard of it. Fennel is supposed to be good in between courses as a palate cleanser and digestive aid. I have read that you can buy sugar-coated fennel seeds in Indian grocery stores. I have never tried it, so I don't know how well it works. I am sure it's safe.

Yep - sugar coated fennels seeds are a favorite Indian after dinner treat. Fennels seeds are almost all insoluble fiber and chewed they could exacerbate IBS. If you do chew fennel seeds then it might be wise to eat them with a good soluble fiber base. Even then you may find they cause problems.

Best to chew then spit them out, not swallow - that will avoid the insoluble fiber. -nt- new

Personally, I'd rather brew a cup of fennel tea or chew on a piece of black licorice instead.
