Hi Chris - I'd definitely stop the psyllium and switch to another soluble fiber supplement. Check here for info web page

Also, ask your doc asap about changing anti-depressants. These drugs can greatly help or worsen IBS - it depends on the class. Your doc should be familiar with all this. There's also some drug info in the IBS glossary here web page You shouldn't just have to live with these side effects.

Chris, watch out for those antidepressants! My doc had me on one, and I had to take myself off it. It really REALLY caused cramping. (I'm surprised my doc didn't know that.) Boy, my tummy was not happy with me AT ALL! I just went cold turkey with the antidepressants -- and recently I gave up coffee. I'm now a happy camper! Bev.

My only advice is not to go off your anti-depressent without your Doctor's help. The side effects of going cold turkey off your anti-D can be very diffcult on your body.

I take Paxil everyday for anxiety and I do very well on it.

Hope this helps.

I'm fairly new to the message boards too but something you didn't mention was exercise. You did however, say you are following Heather's guidelines in her book so you probably are exercising. I've noticed some improvement with cramping sx. just by the exercise alone. Even if you don't exercise rigoursly at the minimum go for a walk and do stretching exercises like the positions listed in the yoga section. They help with the gas a lot. I'm a psychologist and Heather is right about the antidepressants......depends on the class of drugs.......many have side effects.......read up on them. However, many can help you as well too. It sometimes takes time to find the right one if you need one at all. Also, drink a lot of water at room temperature.

PLEASE DO NOT STOP TAKING ANTIDEPRESSANTS COLD TURKEY WITHOUT CHECKING WITH YOUR DOCTOR!! I have been taking various antidepressants for about 10 years and some of them can have terrible side effects if you stop taking them cold turkey (especially the SSRIs). Just wanted to throw that warning out there. Good luck!! )

Dear Chris,

You mentioned that you are exercising although it is difficult. You said in parenthesis (gas and cramping)....the good thing about the exercise especially the yoga positions is that you will get the gas and cramping associated with it out! "Get out of there bad gas and cramps!"

As for the SSRI's, just research up on it and see if there are one's that aren't as bad in the gastrointestinal area. I'd help you on this but I haven't been working as a psychologist for two years and they have introduced a few new meds in the last year "they are always marketing some new antidepressant". So, I'm kinda out of the loop on what to recommend. Also, be sure that it is indeed the anti-dep causing these sx.

Good Luck!

I just started taking an older antidepressent. So far so good but it doesn't take effect for a few weeks, and it's a very low dose. 10mg. They're called Apo-amitriptylime. (Not sure of the spelling.)The Doctor said they should help with pain as well. A side effect was constipation, but that's better than the other I think.

I had to try several antidepressants before I found one that helped me. I started with desipramine, an older one, then tried buspar. Finally I tried Zoloft, which I knew from Heathers book might be a bad choice since I'm IBS-D. I had 4 weeks of d when I started zoloft, but I was determined to give it a chance. After 4 weeks, the d stopped, and now I've had 3 of teh best months I can remember. I don't know how long you've been on the ssri you take, but if its been a short time, I'd recommend giving it a little more time before asking your doctor to switch. Also no one has asked, are you also doing therapy or just the drugs? So many doctors now prescribe antidepressants without encouraging people to talk through the problems that the drugs provide relief for.
Good luck with it all, its a frustrating bit of trial and error for us all.
