Okay, I have a feeling this thread will spiral out of control pretty quickly, but it's a great topic and when we get a long list of names I'll try to post the info as a separate page on this site.
Please do NOT start a new post on this topic, just reply to this post only. List the doctor's first and last name, and their city/state/country. If you have their office phone number include that.
I'll start the ball rolling by recommending:
Dr. Lucy Harris, Cornell University GI Department, New York, NY (she is moving to Arizona, the Mayo Clinic, sometime in 2004)
Dr. Jane Geders, Mt. Kisco Medical Group,
South Bedford Road, Mt. Kisco, New York, Telephone, 914-242-1370.
Dr. Alice Friedman, Austin Diagnostic Clinic, Austin, TX
Dr. Noel B. Hershfield, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, (403) 240-4084
Dr. Tomas Hinojosa, Jr., Digestive Health Associates, Reno, NV (775) 829 7600
Dr. Shaibal Mazumdar, Menomonee Falls, WI (262) 251 7500
Dr. Robert Sudduth, Bremerton, WA, (360) 782 3735
Add the docs you love to the list!

They are not doctors ( although Joe is studying to get his medical degree) but I have found the most help from Joe and Len at www.askrph3.com or 1-888-askrph3..they are registered pharmacists and nutritionists who focus on your diet and supplementation. And, they are WONDERFULLY compassionate! I recommend them to anyone...they are based out of the Pittsburgh Area if anyone is nearby and wants to meet them in person.

Dr Hope Honig, DO Philadelphia, PA USA
She is a family practitioner, and until I had to move recently, she was my doctor. Not only is Hope a GREAT doctor (better than her husband who she shares an office with), but she has IBS herself!

My GI Doctor is in Heather's list: Dr. Robert Sudduth, Bremerton, WA, (360) 782 3735.
I just wanted it to be know that is a great doctor who was finally able to figure out what was causing all the pain and gas. Also he is the only doctor that I have had that didn't try to push medication on me and let me control it with my diet and stress management. Dr. Suddeth and his nurse have made it clear to me many times to call anytime I have any problems. It's nice to know that there are still a few doctors out there who really do want to help!
Oh and Heather, he was pleased to have a piece of your mint fudge cake. It was the least I could do for him giving me my life back.

Just discovered your original post from 0603. It looks like it lost momentum, in terms of posts continuing to be added with more names. Is this correct or are there other new posts after 063003 (b/c the last post in this thread was on 063003) that continued to identify MDs/naturopaths or other H'Care practitioners who are IBS savvy and sensitive?
Or even better, did the no. of good H'Care providers become long enough for you to create a webpage on this site, like you said you wanted to do?
Thanks so much. I'd really like to find someone in the SF Bay area if possible b/c my GI MD at Kaiser has some degree of sensitivity but he's useless re: any in-depth knowledge so all he ever wants to do for me is to prescribe meds. However, I don't want to use meds, b/c I strongly believe that the common side-effects of ALL drugs prevent them from being helpful for LONGTERM use in managing my C-IBS. So I really want to figure out how to manage my symptoms w/o them, b/c I don't want to start to depend on one of them and then have to give it up due to its side-effects!

Hi - I haven't broken out a web page for this yet. I will - it's on my list. There are other elements I'm trying to put into stand-alone pages first (like medications and tests) for the IBS Glossary. There's also an on-going list of IBS-safe foods and drinks, organized by country.
It's all a matter of time, which I just don't have enough of. But it will get done, I promise.

Just a shot in the dark, but there are several CA hypnotherapists who do gut-directed work. I don't know if the cities they're in are near SF, but if they are, they might have some good local doc recommendations. Any GI doc who's sending IBS patients to a trained hypnotherapist is definitely up on his research and aware of what can really help patients. Might be worth a shot to just cold-call these folks and ask if they know some good docs for you. There's a list of them, by state, here web page

Hey Lithelady!
I'm in the Bay Area and have Kaiser as well. I just recently had an appt with a GI at the Santa Clara facility in Aug. Well, it turned out to be her first day so after listening to me for 30 minutes, she went and got another doctor. I really wished I had gotten that other doctor's name because she was amazing. She listened to me and then went over different tests she wanted to try and discussed options on where to go if the tests don't show anything. She also gave me levsin which has helped tremendously.
She told me to come back and see her in 2 months and then went and scheduled the appointment for me! (if you know Kaiser, you know it is a pain-in-the-butt system!) Unfortunately, I think she scheduled me with the 1st doctor. My appt is on 10/7 so when I go in, I'm going to get the name of the helpful doctor to see if I can get appointments with her!
Will let you know what happens.

Heather, Txs so much for the link to the list of hypnotherapists. I haven't been able to join in here since early Oct until today so I just found your reply from 9/29 tonight. It's a great link w/ lots of good info about hypnoRx research studies. Also has a list of health providers trained in the Palsson hypnoRx technique, which, according to this site, is the only approach that's been proven in research studies to work well.
I plan to spend some "quality time" tomorrrow reading the info and linked research articlee at this site, b/c I'm pretty certain at this point that I need and want to do some hypnoRx to help me w/ my IBS. I'll send you anything I find that seems worthwhile for the research lib. Txs again and hope you have a great wkend. LL

Thanks, any good info you find would be much appreciated. Definitely check in at the IBS Hypnotherapy forum here on the boards. Shawn has posted a wealth of great articles and links in that forum. He's actually in touch with Dr. Palsson and so has access to some research even before it's published. He also has terrific research from Mike's hypno program.
If you haven't read through the general info about gut-directed hypnotherapy and how it works, how to find a therapist locally and what to ask them to make sure they can treat IBS, what to do if you can't find someone locally, etc. check here web page
Best, Heather

Heather, Thanks alot for the hypno link and I'll definitely look at Shawn's board as well. I've got my GI tract fairly well stabilized on your diet, although it took much longer to accomplish this than I'd expected it would when I began on it back in early August- probably b/c I have had such severe C-IBS sxs for so long. Also, the balance I've been able to achieve thus far is a "delicate" one. I can't imagine how much effort and time you must have put into figuring out all of what's in your books!!
So, now I've decided I need- and want- to take the time to learn about hypno. I want to know if they will help me to achieve an even better balance w/ managing my IBS, and moreso have more peace of mind that the balance I achieve will continue once I start to get a life again, which I dearly want to have. I miss the one I used to have so much! I was very involved in sooooo many things, both professionally and personally; somedays I feel like I've lost the me I used to be. The GOOD thing tho is that I've become a much more patient and focused person, . SO, once I'm a " bit" better stabilized- [primarily it's only my sleeping problem, that I posted about yesterday, that's limiting me now. Your thoughts in regards to my post yesterday would be great whenever you have the time]- I intend to turn my enthusiasm and energy to helping others w/ this nasty problem.
I feel certain that a cure for this mystery called IBS is possible, esp. now that it's commanding so much more attention in the medical and pharmaceutical world. These are 2 related, but distinctly different, "worlds" in which I'm very comfortable. In fact ever since childhood I've been fascinated by the processes of health and illness, which I'm sure is why I chose this direction for my profession. Anyway, time to get studying the hypno info. I've got high hopes that it'll help me as much as your diet has and then......watch out world! Hugs, LL

I notcied they listed my PCP in another city near here and my daughters pediatrician is not listed. He is newer. BTW the woman I went to when I had all the tests done has since lost her license. Hello Can you recommend a good doc in Fort Lauderdale Florida? Just got out of hospital for "complications of IBS" which boils down to putting a nasogastric tube up my nose for 3 days and being NPO, then liquids and now that I'm home very cautious eating. This is the third hospitalization for dehydration (from vomitting) and severe upper bowel pain. Can't go on like this. Won't go on like this! Thanks! Betsy

Thanks for your suggestions, Marnie! Actually at this point, due to following the recipes in Heather's book and her suggestions such as eating french bread before salad in restaurants, I have been IBS attack-free since early July! So at this point, don't think I'll need a doctor, as medication doesn't seem necessary. Let's hope it continues. Good luck to you!

Notice that the GI.........states abt everything......but he does not state IBS. However, I CERTAINLY DID ask before making the appt.!!!

Heather's recommended doctor in Mt. Kisco; Zaftig1's doctor in Philadelphia; and Mags2003's doctor in Willingboro, NJ, are each about an hour away, so someone closer would be nice, although if no one else turns up, I'll probably try one of them.

My doctor is also on the list, Dr. Friedman in Austin. While she's incredibly smart and will make you feel better- she's not very nice. Or polite. But I got over that because I'd rather have a not-nice doctor do a good job than a really nice doctor who doesn't know what they're talking about.

Then you're sadly niave about the vampires in white coats,China-a "not nice" doctor who's extremely knowledgeable but has nothing for contempt for you because you're "just a stupid patient"-or "the cattle",as med students up here at Columbia University like to call them-will be more concerned about what they can get away with to pump up thier bill with thier lawyer's help then your welfare. Then again-there are plenty of "nice" doctors that kill or cripple patients on a regular basis to line thier pockets the exact same way and for the exact same reason.Nice, not nice is IRRELEVANT-the question is the one you need to ask yourself everytime they smile and tell you to just trust them,do this test, take this pill, etc:"Are you doing this for ME,doctor-or am I doing this for YOU?"The answer could save you a broken life. Trust me-15 years dealing with those bastards since high school with 2 parents with cancer and trying to be premed for 4 years myself. Now you know why I decided to become a biochemist. Andrew L.

Dr. Curtis Mark Kaiser Permanete Milpitas, CA
(408) 945-2933 (main Kaiser number)
Dr. Mark has been an extremely understanding GP and I will unfortunately have to leave him when my insurance runs out in March.
Although his knowledge on IBS is limited, he does take the time to listen to his patients and try to understand more about it. And if he doesn't know something, he tries to refer you to someone who does instead of ignoring your concern.
I've never met a doctor before who will listen, explain possible scenarios, and then further explain why a scenario is not possible or what you need to do to improve the symptoms. Dr. Mark does all of this and more!
Even though I probably know more about IBS than him, he was always willing to try new medications (within reason) or refer me to dietitions and gastro doctors to try to get to the bottom of it.
So hopefully if you live in the San Francisco Bay Area and don't mind driving down to the south bay, you should definitely give Dr. Mark a try!

Wow- Andrew, I'm sorry you have had it so rough with doctors. You seem to have quite a chip on your shoulder, but I'm sure you have good reasons for it. My best friend is finishing up her PhD in Biochemistry and my sister is working on her doctorate in Bioengineering, they are both very happy with their career choices and I hope you are as well.
I don't, however, think I'm particularly naive about doctors, especially when it comes to gastro doctors. I've had quite a few. What I was trying to say is that while I don't particularly like Dr. Friedman I *do* trust her. I believe, if you read my post again, that what you'll see is that I say I was suprised that she was so abrupt, but that it is irrelevant to my decision to continue to be her patient.

The GI Department of Presbyterian Medical Center of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Located at 39th and Market, 218 Wright Saunders Building. Website: PENN Digestive and Liver Center
Phone #: 215-662-8900.
Be warned that 1) You'll have to pre-register into the HUP health system, and 2) It can be a long time before they have an opening for an appointment.
My doctor specifically was Dr. Chinyu Su. I was very impressed with her thoroughness and her processes and her acknowledgement that it could still be something else besides IBS. Very, very happy with her (and much more than my previous GI). I wrote about my visit in great detail here.

Since I've posted asking about one, I've done well with the GI I'm seeing up here. He's not very touchy-feely, but he's excellent technically, thinks most of Heather's ideas make sense, has done thorough testing, and is willing to prescribe an anti-spasmodic. So I figure I'm in good shape at this point.

I have to admit I'm partial to Dr. McSteamy (the plastic surgeon Addison should have left her husband for) - rumor is he's going to show up again next season. And why doesn't Dr. Burke have a nickname? He's a doll.
Unfortunately, I've never had a doctor who looks like any of the guys on Grey's Anatomy - even the vet - although I've had a few who seem to think they do!

I think George is so cute but doesn't seem like a doctor. My ob/gyn and GI are actually very handsome but not as handsome as the Grey's doctors. I think Burke is cute too.
I'm just catching up with this season as I just started watching it but am definitely on board for the long haul.

I see Dr. Paul Basuk, on E72nd street. He was recommended by another, person on the boards. (Daliatree who has stopped posting for now it seems). I like him - he's a good listener and will spend a lot of time with you especially the 1st appointment. He's strictly western medicine it seems, he'll listen to the other things I try but I he hasn't made suggestions about them. Oh, I also had my colonoscopy done with Dr. Cwern who is part of the practice of Dr. Shimnaya (sp?) who apparently was instrumental in developing the colonoscope. They're supposed to be "the best" who knows though. They're not G.I.'s they do the procedures only. I haven't tried Dr. Gerson (link below) but I'm interested in learning about him. he doesn't take my insurance and I also am put off by the drawing of him on his site! http://www.mindbodydigestive.com/ If you try him let me know. Thats the best I can do right now! Let me know who you end up trying.

Thanks, Hawkeye. I saw Dr. Blechman (15th and 5th ave)a couple of times, but I don't think he's really into working with someone on strategy. I'd like to try the people at the link you left, but I'm not sure if they take my insurance either--we'll see.

I too am in the Philly area. After many doctor failures, I found an excellent doctor from University of Pennsylvania:
David C. Metz, MD (Division of Gastroenterology, University of Pennsylvania). 215-349-8222
Dr. Metz was the most thorough doctor I have ever been to. He took pages of notes, asked a ton of questions, and sent me for bloodwork and other dietary tests right away. After I was all but confirmed to have IBD, he actually understood that my #1 trigger was stress and anxiety; heck I could be eating the plainest bowl of rice or a banana and that triggered my symptoms (violent diarrhea). So he did something that none of my other doctors did: he sent me to a psychiatrist, who prescribed me with anti-anxiety medicine and I was all but CURED within a couple of months! I could eat ANYTHING without consequence! Too bad my psychiatrist retired (Dr. Stinnett) because he was awesome too!

Good luck with it. Its hard to find someone you fit well with isn't it? I had a doctor who I liked very much because if nothing else she seemed very empathtic and listened well to me (angie eng). when I asked for my chart to be sent to another G.I. for a second opinion I was told by her receptionist that they would be willing to do that but I would be dropped from her practice! THis is after more than 7 years of seeing her! Well needless to say I moved on.

So, I called the Digestive Center and they don't take my insurance either, in fact, they only take United, probably b/c they're associated with Mt. Sinai, and that's their carrier. I did make an appointment with Dr. Basuk on your recommendation, but as a new patient, the first available appointment is late in October, ugh.

I love my GI. Wonderfully helpful and very enthusiastic about his work. He did not skip any test or undermine my condition as being "common" like most PCP's. He stresses good diet instead of pumping me full of meds and always calls me back the same day when I have a question.

Hi there, I live in Oakland but lived in Berkely when I first moved up here almost 10 years ago. I went to a GI about 8 years ago. I did not see her extensively - IBS was already suspected before I was referred to her. She did my sigmoidoscopy and had me go in for a barium enema. I did really like her bedside manner. Hopefully you'll get some other recommendations as well. Good luck!

I'm looking for a doctor in the Philly area (live in suburbs) who I can trust to take care of my 30+ years of IBS. It has been added by something else and I now can't even sleep at night due to restless legs (and arms) and especially painful cramping and spasms as soon as I lie down; I might as well work the night shift. The only thing that really lets me sleep is a powerful pain pill and I don't want that to continue. I've been dealing with it for 4 months and would really like to find out what's going on in there. Did you ever hear of SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth)?
Are you still doing well and what kind of medications did the psychiatrist give you? I know I need something to calm me down, but the MD is so damn scared to give me anything. I do alot better with valium at night to help calm things down and be able to sleep.
Thanks for your help. Carol

Please note that this thread is pretty old so the docs in it might have moved or quit practicing.
My GI doc is:
Robert W. Schuman, MD 101 Old Short Hills Road West Orange, New Jersey 07052 973-731-4600
He's not the slightest bit touchy-feely but is an excellent technical doctor. He supports the idea of Soluble Fiber for IBS but doesn't think much of eliminating red meat and alcohol. (I have to say he strikes me as a scotch and steak kind of guy). Here's what I've said about him previously:
Quote:
Dr. Schuman knows his stuff, but he's not going to give you his undivided attention for very long. I suspect he's be a good guy to see for tests and diagnosis - that seems to be his thing. I do well with him because I know I have IBS, treat it with Heather's diet, and go to him with specific questions about tests and meds. My only caution about him is that he has no qualms about prescribing meds that haven't been on the market long. Having been on Propulsid before it got yanked, I'm pretty cautious about new meds.
Today I would modify that to say he's a really good guy. When I went back to him in misery last Fall, he could not have been nicer.
When I was checking to see if I'd already recommended him in this thread, I found this reference to a guy in New York: old post

Does anybody know of any other good IBS doctors in CT?
Just curious too, how did you all find your good doctors? Was it luck of the draw?

Heather,
Don't you mean Dr. Harris is moving to the AZ Mayo Clinic in 2014, NOT 2004??
Thanks!
It's SO bitter cold here in WI, I WISH I could go LIVE there RIGHT NOW!!!
-------------------- Originally diagnosed with IBS-C in Spring, 2008. During spring to fall of 2008, had at least 10 acupuncture treatments and Chinese herbs. IBS went into remission. IBS returned in late July 2013 after taking 2 oral contrasts for a CT scan for cancer follow up. Had more acupuncture with different practitioner in summer 2014, but received little benefit.
