Heather,

I understand that artificial sweetners are very hard to digest (sorbitol, HFCS)... but since Splenda is a natural derivative of sugar (sucralose), is it still pretty shaky to use with IBS?

Also, I am pretty sure I am frutose intolerant... honey definitely doesn't agree with me, and I always have severe stomach pains after eating fruit (tons of bloating ) Actually, I'm SURE I am fructose intolerant...

I know fructose is a natural sugar in fruits, so this is probably a stupid question, but are there any fruits that are particularly low in fructose-- and which fruits do you recommend? (Are papaya bad, I just bought some for soothing... )

Thanks so much for all your help, advice, and information

luvins,

Sarah

PS-- The latest studies relating IBS and fructose intolerance were done at the university I attend... how exciting!! I'm almost tempted to see if they need any subjects for further testing *lol* j/k

Hi - Splenda can still cause GI side effects. You can try some and see how you do, but I'd be careful. You're better off using plain sucrose (white or brown table sugar) or stevia.

Do a board search for fruit and fructose - I know there have been some past posts with links to lists of lower fructose-level fruits.

Papayas are famous for their digestive enzymes, and usually really helpful as digestive aids, but I don't know the fructose content.
