I have found different statements about the fiber content of quinoa. One table I found on the internet said about 5 grams per 100 grams. But when I went to buy some all the boxes I found at the store claimed that the fiber content was between 13 and 15.5 grams per 100 grams AND that the serving size was 100 grams... This seems like a whole lot of fiber - especially if it's supposed to be mainly soluble. And if the fiber content is that high, should I start with a small serving to get used to the high fiber level in much the same way as what's recommended with SFS? What's the deal here?
Is all quinoa whole grain?
Thanks,
Ulrika, IBS-D

Thanks Shell. Still can't get why the quinoa boxes I've found list 13-15.5% fiber though. Could there be differences, i.e. could it be processed in different ways to make the fiber content different?

I think it's saying it is 13-15.5 % of your total recommended fiber for the day.
Is this SF or IF though? Corn is a whole grain too, right? But it's soluble in cereals and polento. Quinoa is listed on the SF list.

I'm not sure about the differnt processes?
Do you recall the brands that you looked at?
SAMPLE: Arrowhead Mills (very common brand) 100 g (dry) 7 g dietary fiber 28% daily value

I went to the website and it looks like it was per 1/4 cup or (42g) that would work out to 7.14 grams of fiber per 100 mg

The brands I've found are "Druvan" and "GoGreen" which are both Swedish brands I think.

No!!!!!!!
It says 13-15.5 grams per 100 grams of quinoa depending on if it's red or white! So it has nothing to do with the recommended daily fiber dose.

So basically Shell's post above shows that there are different types of quinoa and they all have different fiber content but it should mostly be SF so it is still completely safe to eat quinoa?
Could it still be wise to start with a small serving since it contains so much fiber? I mean even with SF you should increase the amount slowly right (like with SFS for example)?
Is it ok to vary the amount of SF a lot from day to day as long as you make SF the base of all meals? And - it is enough to let SF foods take up the larger part of the plate when you eat or do you need to take into consideration how much fiber different SF foods contain, meaning you need to take more of a SF food that contains less fiber than of a SF food that contains more fiber? That would make it complicated...

Hi - I'm so sorry, I really don't know what's going on. The fiber content of 13 grams sounds really way too high.

I did a search of the scientific papers in the ISI database from 1914 to 2006. There were only 7 publications that resulted from a search using the keywords Quinoa and fibre. Only one paper gave a break down of IF and SF
"The nutritional quality of an infant food from quinoa and its effect on the plasma level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in undernourished children", Ruales J, et al., INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCES AND NUTRITION 53 (2): 143-154 MAR 2002
Table 1. Dietary fibre Soluble fraction (g/100 g) 2.1 ± 0.1 Insoluble fraction (g/100 g) 11.9 ± 0.4
It looks like 100 grams of Quinoa has about 14 grams of fibre of which 85% is IF.

I just ate my quinoa with peas. Why would my box say 3 grams fiber for 1/4 cup? Can it not be used as an SF base?

The Quinoa Corporation gives the total fibre in 1/4 cup as 3 grams which is equivalent to 7.1 grams / 100 grams
http://www.quinoa.net/Nutrition_Facts/nutrition_facts.html
And the USDA database says that there is 5.9 grams per 100 grams.
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/
[ search for quinoa]
The special food company says that in quinoa flour there is 13.6% fibre by weight
http://www.specialfoods.com/quinoa.html
The Quinoa Foods Company give the fibre as ranging from 2.2 grams to 4.4 grams / 100 grams depending on the variety
http://www.quinoafoods.com/en/informacion.html
The label on their Q'Real grain says 6 grams / 1/4 cup which is 13.3 grams / 100 grams
http://www.quinoafoods.com/en/productos.html
I have not been able to find another source of the amount of SF and IF.
