Iron and Vitamin C?

So it turns out I'm anemic - I've been anemic during pregnancies, guess now it's because I've cut out so many iron containing foods, also had a good bit of bleeding after my surgery, who knows why else, but the POINT is that adding iron in my diet is my first step, but I want to stay safe if possible too. I know red meat has a lot of iron but it is a no-no. Cooked spinach maybe? Also, raisins have iron right? I eat those every day in my oatmeal, but yet still my iron is low, so go figure. I'm also trying to eat cashews when I can, they are supposed to have high iron. Still, it's not enough it seems. My Dr says I should take an iron supplement along with Vitamin C because it helps with the absorption of iron. I've read here that both can cause upset! I don't want that! Any suggestions? I'm prone to C and when I had to take iron while pregnant it C'd me up BADLY, so that's one of my concerns. Thanks!

I have heard that asparagus has tons of iron in it. I would assume it would be safe if prepared correctly. Puree or mashed or steamed etc.
I currently take a multi vitamin(pre natal) which is extremely high in iron. I am prone to "D" though so I have found the iron very helpful.
However, I would be nervous that the iron would cause you greater "C" problems. I really hope someone can help you out with this. I know I have gotten a little with the pills, but no pain really.

Not sure what foods to suggest but try taking magnesium with your calcium to try and prevent the C. Not sure how/why it works but magnesium is suppoed to help C. Maybe Heather knows??

You could try potatoes. Oranges too. Soy milk has iron, some is fortified with more than others, so you can check around for that. Actually anything with soy/tofu usually has iron in it. You could try Total cereal.

I've done some posts previously on vitamin C - I can't work out why a supplement of this could hurt you, as long as you DON'T get a citrus type.
Not sure about the iron and C as I'm D.
All dark green veg are high in iron, so broccoli, spinach, etc. As you're C, can you cope with more of these? Maybe making some soup would be an idea - that way you could puree the veg to minimise the insoluble fibre.

Hi - Oatmeal itself is actually a good source of iron. You can take an iron supplement (not at the same time as a calcium supplement, as the calcium will block the absorption of the iron) with something acidic or vitamin C. Not a megadose of C, just what's in a multivitamin. Take both with a meal and you should tolerate things just fine.

Well, maybe the real problem is that I'm vitamin C deficient so not absorbing the iron well? I'm confused - I've been eating plenty of iron lately, the more I learn. Or is my IBS keeping me from absorbing the iron well? This is confusing, but I'd really like to avoid taking an iron supplement if I can, just increase it in my diet. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Michelle! I've been dealing with the iron issue myself recently. I recently put together a blood drive and wanted to give SO BAD. And, I knew how limited we are, I was really nervous about coming up short for my iron and being denied. Unfortunately, I did. Not to the point of being anemic, but not high enough to give blood.
Anyway, along the way I found this pamplet that I and the other girls at work (where I had the blood drive) found helpful: http://www.beefinfo.org/pdf/IAW.pdf
Also, I just started a multi-vitamin for women (OneSource multi for women) yesterday that has 150% or 27 mg of iron. It also has 50% or 200 mg of magnesium. I'm not sure if that's enough to help you for the C if you took a multi like this.
Hope this helps! And also, if you can tolerate a little OJ and you take your multi with that, you can absorb more.

I did not know that drinking coffee with your meal inhibits iron absorption. I have coffee (guilty!) every morning with my oatmeal & raisins(which both have iron), I'll stop that and have it a little later in the morning. Instead I'll have OJ (found low acid kind that at least makes it easier on tummy) so the vit c can help absorb the iron. I did know that calcium/dairy inhibit iron absorption and have not had the 2 together. I could try that vitamin you suggested but I'm so leery of pills/supplements right now! Thanks for the info!

It's a roasted soy bean drink that's supposed to taste almost exactly like coffee. Haven't tried it myself (I'm surely the only person in Seattle who does not like coffee!) but there have been past posts on the board by people who rave about it. And it won't trigger IBS symptoms like coffee can.

Michelle: Coffee is my worst trigger, try stopping it and see if your symptoms get better. I don't know too many IBSers that can drink coffee, even decaf.

I wonder where you live and find it since, unfortunately there's no store within 25 mi. of us and for some reason I couldn't send an email tothe site telling of stores in our area to contact re selling it. Neither could I order it as their store is closed dn. on the net at least temporarily....! W.look fwd to finding it in the future.

Since ya mention soy products, has any heard of the brand revival? They make several delicious foods and supplements including multivitamins and accessories for soy cooking. Here is the wesite www.soyproducts.com click on one of the products on the left and then find supplements.I just also read about Soy products can block minerals from absorbing and this website clarified what I read and gave info how to eat soy products and take vitamins. Anyone ever heard of soy products being unhealthy? I have found so many things I can tolerate through soy hate to have to give it up. I have a little enemia too. I go to the Dr on Thurs because my hair has been falling out, not in abundance but it is thinning and falls out when I was it. Wish me luck. Sherri

Karin,
Was this a recipe or a blend? I couldn't find it on the site. I just tried Rocamojo for the first time and hated it! I want to drink it though (it was $10 and I hate to waste it!) so I need "mix-in's". Let me know any ideas to "liven it up"!

I just used about 3 full teaspoons of the Rocamojo in a little over 1/2 cup hot water in a separate cup. Then I fill and heat a mug half full with rice milk, a teaspoon of carob powder (you can use cocoa instead) and some honey. I use a coffee strainer to strain the strong coffee into the hot milk mixture then I have my mocha. I've learned with IBS that some things take some time to develop a taste for, but it usually happens or you just starve.........lol. Many things I hated before I eat now because I've developed a taste for them. I hated carob when I first started this diet, but now I've come to appreciate it.

Now it sounds like something I can tolerate! Of course, anything with chocolate is tolerabe-I have NO PUDGE brownies in the oven as I type! I'll make a cup of Rocomojo Mocha to go along with them! LOL

I found other kinds of brownies on the index, but no "No-Pudge" variety. ???? Are they are good as the "Antidepressant" kind? (I love them!)

Hi Sherri, Please have your thyroid levels checked next blood work you have done, ok? The hair falling out might be a good indicator. Also notice if you have less hair on your forearms than you used to. (There are so many other symptoms to numerous to go into here.) If you test out to be hypothyroid, or even close to it (they keep lowering the TSH ranges) you should'nt consume soy in any form. (sorry) Email me if you want more info. BTW, where in So Cal are you? (First off, BEAUTIFUl picture of you!) Just passing on a little info here.......
Raisins are NOT as high in iron as some think. Historically they used to be because they were dried on iron plates. The raisins picked up the iron. Raisins are not processed that way today. (Your oatmeal is likely higher in iron.) A better source is blackstrap molasses. Yummy stirred into a soy or rice beverage as you would chocolate syrup into milk. Doc is right, Vit. C helps you absorb iron better BUT any plant source of iron is not absorbed as well as an animal source. (You may have to bite the bullet and take an iron pill for a while, but if it upsets your gut take with food or at night just before you retire.) If you have a problem with regular Vit. C, (I do) then go the "sodium ascorbate" route, not ascorbic acid. Even the "buffered" ascorbic acid kind, which contains calcium can be hard on the gut.
They even make a tiny 25mg. sodium ascorbate pill for kids with touchy tummies.

No Pudge is a brownie mix you buy at the store. Check www.nopudge.com for more info. They are my favorite brownies!! All you do is mix it with a container of soy yogurt and bake. Very easy and very yummy. We have gone on endlessly about them before on the boards - I'm sure this is what Heather was talking about. So, if you do a search of the boards for No Pudge, you'll see past posts on it.

(Of course, red meat is also a rich source of iron.) You can add even more iron to your food by doing some of your cooking in iron pots.
If you need an iron supplement, be sure to take it with vitamin C, which enhances iron absorption. The lactic acid in both yogurt and sauerkraut can also help your body absorb iron, as do fermented soy foods, such as miso. Do keep in mind, though, that when you're planning a meal emphasizing iron-rich foods and vitamin C, make it a point to avoid foods that interfere with iron absorption -- such as caffeinated beverages, eggs, milk, and bran.

Gosh, I don't know! I just tried it and a ton came up. Just click on search, type in "no pudge", and under date range select "all posts". Personally, they are my favorite brownies. I've tried the Antidepressant Brownies once, and I like the No Pudge better. They came out more fudgy, but someone posted that if you use egg whites, ADB's come out more fudgy. I had used Egg Beaters, so I have to go back and try making the ADB's again to see if it works.
But, I'm also lazy and when I want my chocolate, I want it NOW!! LOL So, to open a box and just mix it with a yogurt works for me. If you check http://www.nopudge.com/common/where2buy.html, you can see where the No Pudge is sold.

Thanks, Mags, for the web site -- I see I can get them at the Red Apple or at Albertson's, not far from here. Jennifer, it might just be me. I haven't had any form of chocolate whatsoever in YEARS because I was under the misconception I could not have it. When I found out differently, the ADB were the first chocolate I'd had in a very long time. To me, it was like gold (but I had nothing to compare it with). SOOOO, I'm gonna make a jaunt down to Albertson's or the Red Apple and get some of the No Pudge, whip 'em up, then do a taste test. I love taste tests, they're a lot of fun. Jen - if you used the egg whites, then maybe they're just supposed to come out cake like. I don't like cake like brownies. I thought someone said if you use the egg white, they come out like the fudgy kind - the kind I like. But, since you've tried them with the whites & still cakey - thanks for the tip - I won't bother wasting my time to be disappointed!

Kree, did you order it online because you couldn't find it in Rochester? I'm gonna see if I can't find it when I go down to the health food store to get No-Pudge, fennel tea, Soy Gardens and Amy's frozen soy cheese pizza. You miss coffee, eh? Hmmm, that doesn't sound good. I've only been off it for 3 days, and so far I haven't missed it, BUT . . . how many days have you been off it? I'll be anxious to know how you like the Rocomojo. just last night! Top shelf of the brownie and cake mix section. They also have veggie cheese in the produce section. Haven't seen a good source of organic fennel seed locally, though. Whole foods has non-organic, but I try to avoid that, especially because fennel is grown in Egypt, and I don't even want to think about how lax their pesticide/herbicide regulations might be...

Ya gotta make this stuff with yogurt. I was so happy to find the No-Pudge I never bothered to read the instructions. I don't do yogurt. Is there such a thing as soy yogurt? Where do I get it? Hi I'min La Quinta California, you know I haven't got my test done yet...I've been so busy and I have to fast for the test and thats almost impossible for me. Kids,work, etc. but I plan to go this week. Very interesting about soy and thyroid. I did have a thyroid test in July it showed everything normal. Sarted eating the soy products in September and around the beginning of Oct my hair started thinning out when I washed it. Waited about two weeks went to the Doc and she said go for the test. It has stopped coming out quite a bit, and you can see all the hair growth coming back as far as m forearms still the same. My mother has thyroid disease hiro..something rather, she had, had one removed and her other is underactive. Oh yeah! They make soy yogurt. I use a container of vanilla soy Silk brand to make the brownies. Another brand is Whole Soy. I find soy yogurt in my regular grocery store.

Yes, I did order the Rocamojo online because I couldn't find a store that carried it in Rochester. I checked their website, and they said it wasn't carried anywhere within 100 miles! So I figured the only way I was going to get it was to order it online. I hope you find it near you, Bev, but if not the shipping wasn't too expensive! I'll let you know how it is when it comes. As for giving up coffee, I did that almost a year ago! I admit that I allow myself to have one cup about once a month, but other than that I drink peppermint tea instead. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss it at all, because I do get the occassional craving for it. But I'm glad I gave it up, because it's so terrible for my health, and would be even if I didn't have IBS! So don't worry, you'll get through this! There is life without coffee!

Those are my 2 favorite brands, too. If I were you I'd avoid O'Soy. In my opinion that brand is disgusting!
