Help-Not sure if I have IBS

I just bought the book Eating for IBS because I was diagnosed with the syndrome a little over a year ago. After reading the book I'm not sure if I have it anymore. My stomach gets very uneasy especially after eating certain foods such as milk, eggs, raw vegetables, and foods with lots of spices. I have to use the restroom several times sometimes it seems normal, sometimes constipated, sometimes I thought I had to go and its just gas, and on the rare occasion its extreme diarrhea. Its the worst in the morning. I will use the restroom 3-4 times before going to work again as soon as I get there, but maybe just a couple more times the rest of the day. The biggest thing in the book that made me skeptical of IBS is that I don't get the excruciating pain that it mentions for sufferors. I was diagnosed after my doctor put me through several tests such as colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and several blood tests, and found nothing. I was told to stick to bland foods an used immodium whenever necessary. My problem has made it difficult for me to go on long drives, walks, or to social events because I'm afraid I'll have to use the restroom when one is not available. Has anyone ever heard of having IBS without the terrible pain or do you think I have a different problem? Sorry about the long post, just looking for answers.

I am the exact same way. I have trouble with certain foods like you meantioned but am also with no real pain. I have started to take Metamucil once a day before bed and that helps with the bathroom thing in the morning. I am also afraid to go on long drives and to social things, but I hope by stating yoga I can help calm myself to enjoy these things again.

Hi there, and welcome to the board. Your symptoms actually do fit those of IBS, and it sounds like you've had a pretty thorough run of diagnostic tests to rule out other disorders.

The degree of abdominal discomfort or pain can vary tremendously from one person to another. Some people feel very little discomfort and have bowel dysfunction as their chief complaint; other people (like me) have pain so severe we black out from it.

Here are the official diagnostic criteria for IBS, known as the Rome II guidelines:

The diagnostic criteria of Irritable Bowel Syndrome always presumes the absence of a structural or biochemical explanation for the symptoms and is made only by a physician. Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be diagnosed based on at least 12 weeks (which need not be consecutive) in the preceding 12 months, of abdominal discomfort or pain that has two out of three of these features:

1. Relieved with defecation; and/or
2. Onset associated with a change in frequency of stool; and/or
3. Onset associated with a change in form (appearance) of stool.

Symptoms that Cumulatively Support the Diagnosis of IBS:

Abnormal stool frequency (may be defined as greater than 3 bowel movements per day and less than 3 bowel movements per week);
Abnormal stool form (lumpy/hard or loose/watery stool);
Abnormal stool passage (straining, urgency, or feeling of incomplete evacuation);
Passage of mucus;
Bloating or feeling of abdominal distension.

Supportive Symptoms of IBS:

1. Fewer than three bowel movements a week
2. More than three bowel movements a day
3. Hard or lumpy stools
4. Loose (mushy) or watery stools
5. Straining during a bowel movement
6. Urgency (having to rush to have a bowel movement)
7. Feeling of incomplete bowel movement
8. Passing mucus (white material) during a bowel movement
9. Abdominal fullness, bloating, or swelling

Red Flag symptoms which are NOT typical of IBS:

Pain that often awakens/interferes with sleep
Diarrhea that often awakens/interferes with sleep
Blood in your stool (visible or occult)
Weight loss
Fever
Abnormal physical examination

I think the food sensitivities you list also dovetail with IBS, as do the symptoms brought on by stress and by the urgency you experience.

I would definitely add in a soluble fiber supplement right away - that will help a great deal. There's detailed info about this at web page And there's lots of other info on the boards.

Please ask any other questions you have - and don't feel like the oddball here with your symptoms. You're certainly not alone in not experiencing severe pain with your IBS. There's a lot of variation here...

Best,
Heather

I was going through some previous posts and found this informative message from Heather. I have one question. Under "Red Flag symptoms which are NOT typical of IBS" why is Diarrhea that often awakens/interferes with sleep NOT typical of IBS? This has happened to me and I just assumed it was typical.

Hi - It is certainly possible for pain, diarrhea, or other IBS symptoms to wake someone up at night. It's listed as a red flag because IBS shouldn't be waking you up every night, or more nights than not. This is a possible symptom of an inflammatory bowel disease.

This is interesting - for many years, it was said by most doctors and diagnostic descriptions of IBS that it was IMPOSSIBLE to wake up at night with symptoms. I can remember my pediatrician arguing with me when I was about ten years old that the pain was not waking me up suddenly in the middle of the night. Well, it was - and I couldn't figure out why she cared so much that the pain was at night when it hit me just the same during the day. It was many years later I found out that IBS was considered psychological at that time, and therefore when your conscious mind is out of the picture (as when you're asleep) you shouldn't have symptoms. Basically, my doc didn't think there was anything wrong with me, and my nighttime symptoms suggested otherwise, so she was trying to insist that they just did not exist.

Nowadays, it is a well-documented fact that IBS is physical, and so symptoms can certainly wake someone up in the dead of night. After all, your colon is functioning even when you're asleep. But, if this is a really common symptom for you, it warrants some good medical investigation, as it's more likely to happen with other GI disorders than IBS and can point to a really serious problem.

Best,
Heather

Thanks for the information. This has only happened to me a couple of times - not all the time. I was concerned because it was listed as a red flag. Your comments have eased my mind. As always, thanks
