I can see why artifical sweetners and lactose affect ibs, but why does meat? i mean for the most part, isnt meat organic? i mean theres nothing added to it, and isnt man naturally made to digest animal meat? im just asking cause meat seems to be one of my deadliest triggers. (Hamburger)

It's the fat content. Chicken, turkey and seafood are low enough in fat to be OK for us. Beef, as you know is loaded full of fat, as is pork etc. Red meat is a trigger simply because of the high fat content. Even lean cuts don't compare to poultry and seafood. Sucks, huh?

Yep, it's the fat content. Most of that fat is saturated as well, and that's a lot harder for your body to digest. Plus, the proteins in meat are much harder to digest than plant proteins. Meat also has zero fiber and is a very low water-content food, which doesn't help.

Most meat is not organic, in the sense of organically produced foods that are labeled as such. Unless you go to a health food store and buy meat specifically labeled "organic", or you raise and slaughter your own animals the old-fashioned way, any meat you get is going to be full of the antibiotics, growth hormones, and any other drugs the cattle are routinely fed. I've heard from enough folks with IBS who are very sensitive to additives and chemicals in their foods to think that any non-organic meat is going to be even tougher on them. That's why even for IBS safe options like chicken breasts and egg whites, it's a safer choice for your GI health to buy organic. It certainly can't hurt.

Best,
Heather

I love those burgers so much!

That was my biggest adjustment was giving up beef. We grew up in a beef and potatoes family!

When I first moved out on my own I owned a VIP card to BK - no joke at all! It is so difficult to give up beef.

About 3 months before I was officially diagnosed and was helped to find my triggers I tried my first Harvey's burger (there's only one Harvey's here and it's in the Home Depot LOL) Now when I am having a bad day and nothing seems to be helping me I crave a Harvery's burger so badly.

Good news! Harvey's has a really mean veggie burger. It is about the best I've ever tasted and I'm VERY picky. Load it up with condiments (no cheese, of course) and enjoy!

It doesn't have sage in it does it? Because I bought some Veggie burges and it had sage in it. YUCKY! It tasted just like stove top stuffing which just about makes me wanna pewk just thinking about that stuff. Ewww.

Can you tell me what's in it or if it tastes like.
If it's good - TO HOME DEPOT LOL. My husband can look at new taps and I can eat at Harvey's LOL.

Does anyone find that even eating healthy at a fast food place feels like you are getting away with eating greasy food? LOL
