I think I may have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. im going to see the gynecologist to discuss this however. i have heard that a treatment for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is birth control pills. My question is this: Does birth control pills affect ibs-d for the worse? does the diet for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome conflict with the ibs diet?

Hi - There are lots of varieties of birth control pills. Make sure you tell your ob/gyn that you have IBS-D, and you want a version of the pill that is less likely to have negative side effects for you. In general, the pill is as likely to actually help IBS (indirectly) as to hurt, because it tends to make menstrual cramps much lighter, and cramps can often trigger IBS and diarrhea. Your doc should be able to really address these concerns in-depth.
If it does turn out that you have PCOS, you can combine the dietary restrictions for this (lower carb can be helpful) with the IBS diet. From what I've read, the dietary restrictions aren't necessarily across the board with PCOS, but are specifically for people who have a problem with their insulin regulation - many of these folks have PCOS. But, not all PCOS people have a problem with their insulin. So again, talk to your doc and get as much info as possible about what's going on with you specifically, and then post what you find out. We'll tailor dietary guidelines for you and make sure you're doing okay.
Best, Heather

Angela,
Just to let you know I have PCOS and am also currently going through IVF treatment. As Heather says the insulin problem is what matters when looking at diet, I seem to be quite OK with that and so the IBS diet is still good for me. Everyone with PCOS has varying symptoms and to varying degrees. My biggest symptom/problem is infertility - I don't ovulate - hence the IVF. Yet I know friends with PCOS who suffer the weight problems really badly(I'm pretty tiny) yet fall pregnant quite easily. So I guess it's all really individual.
Let us know how you get on, I know a fair bit about PCOS and would be happy to help if I can.
Also, I found that while I was on the pill my IBS was a lot better. I'm not sure if it was the pill or not though as I was also on Anti-Depressants at the time. However I do know that since I came off the pill and my hormones have gone very wayward again my IBS is worse. So I think it may have helped.
