OK - I'm following Heathers new website advice religiously, yeah. I now fully understand the theory about Soluable Fibre... BUT!

and this is a big but...

Why has my doctor, and the nutritionist appointed by my doctor, adviced I eat fibre foods that are listed as Insoluable Fibre??? Surely with their years of experience they wouldn't make an IBS sufferers life more uncomfortable by giving them bad advice???

Until Heather's book and site, I got nothing but bad advice from doctors. Sorry!

The specialist I saw also told me to eat lots of foods rich in fiber---fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc. When I asked him about the two kinds of fibers, he looked at me like I came from another planet.
All I can figure out is most doctors are really ignorant when it comes to IBS. Either that or they like keeping their patients in pain and misery, so they will have to return again and again for those office visits!

Hi - Wish I could answer your question but I don't know either. Check the IBS research library under diet for clinical studies on fiber and IBS. My favorite is the one showing that soluble fiber (as guar gum) is much better for IBS than insoluble (as wheat bran). There are studies on how wheat bran makes most IBS folks worse that go back to the 1980's.

Just fyi, I saw a GI doc about 5 years ago and mentioned that I base my diet in soluble fiber but am careful with insoluble fiber. He asked me if I had coined the term "soluble fiber" as he'd never heard of it! Scariest thing was this guy is a gastro doc treating people with IBD, who can end up with bowel obstructions requiring surgery if they eat too much insoluble fiber.

Don't know whether to laugh or cry about this...

Most docs do NOT get much training in nutrition and often are misinformed. Likely the closest they can relate to is a "low residue" verses "high residue" diet. Even then there are discrepancies. Unfortunately there are no good studies as to the amounts of soluble and insoluble fiber in foods, thus we do not have reliable food fiber charts. The best I have, is this one, and it is limited……………but, it's a start!

When I told my symptoms to my docter, and told her that certain types of fiber really hurt my stomach, she just said to gradually increase it. Fortunatly she recommended Citrocel though. I don't know if she knew about soluble/insoluble fiber and just didn't feel like explaining it to me or just didn't really know.

I am in the same boat as Michelle. My old doctor as well as my current doctor doesn't know anything about the IBS. My current doctor actually told me, if it's working for you I am not going to argue...you do whatever you are doing.

I only go to for non-IBS related things.

Thanx for the link - very interesting..

actually - it's very worrying... Statistically...
Most of the foods have more insoluable fibres in them!!!
This will be a very limited diet...

thanx for your comments.

Hi - don't go by fiber charts so much as the "smushable" rule. Sounds silly, but if a food smushes easily, and you could force it through a sieve, that's a good indication that it's soluble fiber. Think of cooked carrots and potatoes, bananas, applesauce, white rice, corn meal, cooked noodles or barley, etc. Or if you can dissolve it in water and it will form a gel (white bread, cooked rice, pasta, oatmeal, etc.)

If the food isn't smushable and wouldn't dissolve in water, you can assume it's more insoluble fiber (think apple peels, spinach leaves, cucumber seeds, any fruit or veggie that's got a hull or seeds or skins or is fibrous).

The diet is really not limited - you can eat tons of insoluble fiber foods, you just have to do so carefully. Get a soluble fiber base, and you can add in plenty of the fresh fruits and veggies you need.

Also, check here for info on soluble/insoluble quantity in grams vs. amounts you actually need for stability web page

I completely agree with everyone here. It's not necessarily good to go with your doctor's advice in this area! Both my doctor and my gastroenterologist told me to "eat more fiber" when I was diagnosed with IBS. As others have mentioned, they didn't even mention soluble vs. insoluble fiber. I'm so glad I found this site soon afterwards, or I would have been miserable for a long time. Isn't it actually kind of empowering to know that you know more about your illness than most doctors do?
