Hi guys,

I am currently going through IVF treatment which has become necessary due to the fact that I suffer infertility resulting from Polycystic Ovarian Sundrome. What a mouthful!

The drugs, stress of IVF etc have all had an effect on my IBS I'm sure but I'm also starting to think it is working both ways.

Anyhow this is my question.

It is suggested that prior to and following the "egg pick up" operation I should stick to a high protein diet. Apparently this helps to avoid and deal with hyperstimulation of the ovaries. I have had this before and I don't want it again! I was quite sick.

Does anyone have a good menu suggestion for a high protein diet also compatible with the IBS diet?

Also it has been suggested that I use a protein powder drink (available from pharmacies) as well. has anyone tried these? can they be made with soy milk? Are they IBS friendly or are the ingredients full of dairy etc? I haven't looked at them yet, I was just wondering if anyone else has any info on them.

Thanks guys,
Kerrie

Hi - You should be able to add in lots of egg whites, soy, and fish without problems. Maybe substitute some soluble fiber supplements for the soluble fiber foods for a bit - that will keep you stable but lower your carbs. Make sure to drink a LOT of water because protein can be constipating.

Plus, you can get pure soy protein powder that's totally dairy free. I use a vanilla flavor to whip up with fresh fruit for smoothies with some soy milk, and it's delicious!

Hang in there...pretty soon you'll be preggers and we'll all be celebrating and then your diet can go back to normal!

Best,
Heather

Angela,
This is a good website that explains all of the symptoms of PCOS and also the treatments. I found it really helpful.

www.womens-health.co.uk/pcos.htm

I was diagnosed about 4 years ago and it came up through infertility issues. Once they started running tests to see why I wasn't falling pregnant we discovered the PCOS. It was diagnosed through bloodwork and also ultrasound scans.

Let me know how you go and ask any questions you like.
