Who can still eat whole fruit?

I am a long time IBS-D sufferer who mostly lurks on this board. I was diagnosed in 1997 after losing more thant 10 lbs in a week because I couldn't keep anything in my system (also about the time I started having "stage fright" in graduate school--got sick every time I had to present things).
I know my IBS is not as severe as many of the people here, and I have had a lot of success going on the allergy shots (my old gastro was working on a study that says if you have crud in your intestine from allergy drainage, ew, that can trigger or increase IBS)--
What I wanted to know is how many of you are able to eat fruit plain? I never seem to have too much trouble with eating fruit with the skin on--plums, apples, peaches, blueberries, etc. Raisins also don't trigger a reaction.
Am I the only one eating fruit without cooking/peeling/pureeing it first?

Hi Merideth, Nope, I always have a banana and apple with lunch, although bananas are SF. I do eat the apple skin. -Bob

I will peel something with a really tough skin, like an apple. And I won't have a huge amount, and I won't do this if I'm at all touchy. But when I'm stable I try to have as much fresh fruit as possible, and having a piece for dessert works really well. If I really want to cram in more fruit, I'll make a smoothie.

I can eat decent amounts of bananas, apples, and peaches without any problem, although bananas are usually the only one I'll risk on an empty stomach. I can also eat smaller amounts of berries and melons after a meal, although I'm really careful with seedier berries like strawberries and raspberries.

That would be awesome to bite into a fresh juicy golden delicious apple this fall...skin and all!
You're season is coming, Kree.
I think I do better with the strawberries than I would with an apple. Do you have diverticulitis too?
I think I may just try an apple and see how it goes!

I eat berries whole and fresh every single morning, and I LOVE my nectarines, peaches, and plumcots (they're a weird hybrid between plums and apricots and they are SO GOOD). Oh, and grapes! Can't forget those! About the only fruit I don't eat skin-on is apples, but that's mostly because I don't like apples much to begin with except in things where they'd normally be peeled anyway - like apple pie, heh.
I don't necessarily eat them on a full(er) stomach, either, but I do make sure to have soluble fiber with them... and I've been totally fine.

Do you have diverticulitis? If so, I'm totally amazed you can eat strawberries. I don't have it, but my father did (well, I guess he technically still does), and he was told by his doctor to avoid nuts and seeds, even the tiny ones in strawberries.
I'm not meaning to be a downer or anything. I actually always thought that he'd probably be able to get away with strawberries, but hey, I'm no doctor. LOL

I eat peaches because they actually seem to help regulate my intestines. They make me have a bowel movement in the mornings more often. I get both constipation and diarrhea, but the peaches acutally help because when things are moving regularly I have less symptoms. I will eat plums too but I generally only eat them at night in case they cause me problems. If I do have a problem with fruit it is usually gas, not D.

Hope that explains it a little better. Poor grammar on my part

Heather, Really! If you think apple skins are too tough, and you're very stable, then maybe I'm being rather stupid by eating an apple with skin just after a banana for lunch. I'm not at all stable particularly in regard to BM's and gas. I just thought I needed the extra IF to help with the BM's, but if it's actually causing spasms and gas, that's not helping. Hmm....Thanks for the info. -Bob

I do know there are others on the board who can and who do eat apple skins. I think Ruchie is one of them and maybe Dalia. I think there are others.
Why don't you just experiment for a week by peeling them and see if you feel any different? I know it's hard to isolate one particular food when you are still may be having problems by others...hard to know if the apple skins are okay or not. Like, if you do peel them, and you still hurt, it may still be better for you, but something else isn't sitting right and you may assume that the peel is okay because you feel the same with or without it.
This is very confusing and I have yet to figure out what is and what is not safe for me.

No, I don't have diverticulitis, at least as far as I know. I've just always found seeds hard to digest, so I figure I'm safer avoiding too many of them!

Hi Bob. I'm not sure about cooked apple skins. I've eaten cooked pear skins without a problem, and I don't think apple would be much different. Maybe someone else has a better idea about that.

If you look at Heather's list, I think seeded fruits tend to have more IF than less seeded fruits. For example, apples and bananas don't have many seeds, and they're mostly SF (except for the apple skins). Strawberries, etc. are more IF. Just an observation. Maybe that's what bothers me and not the seeds!

Kree, You're probably right about pears and apple skins having the same degree of toughness. My Dad was telling me that you can easily bake apples in a microwave. I might try that, as I probably need more IF. Thanks. -Bob

Yeah, thanks Cyndy, that sounds like a good idea. I too am totally at a loss figuring out which foods if any are causing me problems. Maybe the gas and BM problems I have result from the stress of having them. Boy, is that cyclic. When I was at my sister's place in Chicago for a week at the end of May, I was eating all kinds of IF, drinking coffee and putting half and half in it, and feeling much better than I am now. I just don't get it! I often wonder if it was just psychological in that I was with my immediate family and subconsciously was feeling happy and secure. You are certainly right about all of this being very confusing. Thanks for your idea. -Bob

You know, I've been wondering how well I could handle fruit for awhile now, and this thread inspired me to eat a whole peach as an experiment. I'll let you know in the next 4 to 24 hours if that was a good idea! I know I can't eat oranges anymore. Nope, not worth it at all.
I am okay with bananas, canned peaches & pears, and some berries.

I remember you posting that you were going to start eating raisin bran again...or Trader Joe high fiber cereal of some type.
How is it working for you? Are you feeling better with the C when you eat it? Shelby eats a bowl of Raisin Bran at night and says it helps her.
I don't know if I should try this as an evening snack. I'm scared to have it as a snack without a SF buffer...but afraid to eat it in the early morning first thing too.
But, I think it might help the C...like you were saying in your post about eating tons of IF and feeling better. Sometimes I wonder if that is just the way to go.
I also wonder if my pain and C and gas is largely caused by the stress of having them! This leads us in a vicious cycle.

Boy, am I glad to hear that I am not the only one! I really have never had a problem with fruit. I can even eat some whole wheat products (mostly cereal). My HUGE triggers are caffeine, carbonation, dairy and high fat junk food.
I'm coming off two years of being ovo-vegetarian, which really didn't work well for me at all. Everything at restaurants that is veggie is usually drenched in cheese. Now I can have a nice piece of fish or chicken and not be the center of attention anymore.
Thanks for everyone's responses!!

Hi Beth, I had started eating 2 cup bowls of Raisin Bran about an hour after my oatmeal in the morning, but I got really bad gas from it, and have cut it back to 1 cup bowls and the gas is much better. Yeah, I was able to eat tons of IF at my sister's in Chicago at the end of May, but I haven't been able to come close since. I can't exactly figure out why?! My latter morning BM's have been a bit better for a about a week now. I think this might be the Paxil since it's been a month that I've been taking it. The early morning BM's are still pretty hellish though . Also, I said exactly the same thing about the vicious cycle! Teaching classes at school starts for me tomorrow, I'm just praying that it goes ok. -Bob

I haven't noticed bananas to make me C. And as for the peach skins... I've never really liked the texture of them, so I peel them for that reason.

Do you tolerate one cup after the oatmeal? Have you ever tried eating it without the oatmeal?
Do the raisins bother you with the higher fructose level?
Sorry so many questions...I'm so tempted, but scared to try this. Maybe I might start with plain bran flakes first, I'm so chicken...plus, I don't want to shell out money for a box of cerel, eat one bowl, and have to throw the whole box out...I already have had to do that too much with food. On a limited budget, that's hard because it means going without something else.

Beth, I think the one cup does help with the C, but I'm not entirely sure. I used to eat it without oatmeal before I knew any better. In fact, I used to eat 2 cups of Trader Joe's RB with oat clusters, 18 grams IF! Now, I betcha I'd be burping nonstop if I did that. Raisin brans do have a very good rep with helping C though. No,I don't seem to have problems with raisins. They're in the oatmeal cookies I eat(which also have shortening and presumably whole eggs in them) and they don't bother. In fact, I just finished eating two. Plain bran flakes to start would probably be a good idea. When you get RB, I recommend Kellogg's brand, and let them soak in the 'milk', they get nice and mushy that way, and are very easy to eat. Same thing with the plain bran flakes, let them soak too. -Bob
