Hello. Im new to the message boards and just recieved my eating for IBS book this week in the mail. This is my first post. I am a IBS-c and have been diagnosed with IBS since I was 15. Lately all of my symptoms have worsened so I have started following Heather's diet and suggestions. The hardest thing for me has been to give up caffine. I feel like I have barely half the energy that I used to. My stomach has been feeling better without the many cups of coffee that I would drink first thing in the morning, but I feel lazy all day without my jump start and struggle to get through my workouts. I also feel more c because coffee would help me with my bm every morning. Any suggestions.

and try switching to green tea for a while. It has caffeine but will be a lot easier on your IBS. Then you can start tapering off the tea onto decaf green tea, or herbal teas (best bet for actively helping your IBS), or one of the non-coffee coffees like Rocamojo.
And welcome to the site!

It may be totally psychological, but I get a bit of a lift from red earl gray tea. Kalahari makes a tasty version.

I've noticed that red (rooibus) tea seems to give me a little more *oomph*. Or, at least, red chai does. Try the Yogi Teas Redbush Chai (if for no other reason than it's really darn good!).

My suggestion is stick with the workouts because, in the long run, exercise will give you energy.
In the short term, you just have to persevere. Once you get past the short term caffeine withdrawal effects (which can be overwhelming), you're going to feel like a whole new person and your IBS will be so much better!
Hang in there! Don't give in!

Hi Steph, I would say go back to just a cup or two of coffee, especially if it helps with your BM's. If that were the case with me, I sure would. The one thing I really miss is coffee! -Bob

Dear Steph; I actually had to drop out of college my brain was so lethargic without coffee.Once you're stable, but, something strange and wonderful happens:Your system actually adjusts to life without the coffee rush;your adrenlal system goes back to normal and in a few weeks, you won't need a lot of caffiene to create a "lift"-green tea will suffice. It won't be like coffee and you'll need to sleep a lot more-but it'll be a much HEALTHIER lifestyle and once your system adjusts, you won't believe how much better you'll feel. There still will be days you miss the lift-but it's a lot better then the pain.Hang in there. It'll take time, but it will happen. Sincerely, Andrew L.
