Hello everyone. I am new and yet to be officially diagnosed with IBS. I am working through all the tests. I suspect that the colonoscopy will be next. Still I have heard IBS mentioned several times by the many doctors I have encountered recently. I wanted to see if my experiences match with anyone else's. First of all, I am 37. This seems a little late to suddenly have symptoms appear, based on what I have read. I started with abdominal pain in my lower left side which came and went. Then it became fairly constant. Recently, the pain seems to be mostly in the center of my abdomen and has at times been intense. Diarrhea has also been a problem for the last six weeks. I have had a CT and a Barium Enema, but nothing has shown up so far. I turned to this site because the pain was getting unbearable and I was willing to give anything a try. I have made a few changes in my eating habits. I switched to white bread, cut out dairy and am trying to eat a lower fat diet. I gave up coffee and wine before all my problems started, ironically. I have only been at this a couple of days. I seem to be able to manage raw fruit and veggie snacks if I have them after the soluble stuff. I still have some discomfort, but not the really sharp pains. Did anyone else encounter IBS at my age or older? I really don't think I had symptoms earlier. Has anyone else had a similar progression in symptoms?

My symptoms began at age 43. Everything I read says IBS should get better as you get older. In my case, it is getting worse!

Mine started when I was 31.I don't suffer as much now as I did then, because I know now what it is and how to control it.

It first hit in May this year, shortly after suffering a flu-type virus. Went through the tests, and ended up having my Colonoscopy the day after my 31st Birthday...Happy birthday to me!!. I spent my special day eating nothing but Jelly, drinking the foul pre-op medicine (to clean you out)and visiting with my old friend the porcelain alter...

I was dreading the OP, because I'd never had anything like it before and didn't like the idea of being blacked out whilst having the anal probe. That said, it was all over very quickly...didn't hurt and was one hell of a relief to come out that I didn't have something fatal. Now it's just a case of learning to adapt both from a diet perspective, but also reducing stress (which I believe is my biggest issue) so that life can get back on track.

As a fellow newbie, you're in the right place for help and support...everyone is so kind and giving, and Heather's just the best host (good food too!!).

Anyway, droned on a bit I know, but I wish you all the best with your tests.
Regards,
Tim

Mine began at at 28 after a parasitic infection and has stayed with me. I have it under control with the IBS diet. I had/have very similar symtoms to what you are describing.

Very similar as myself. I took a tour of Mexico and got ameobic dysentary. I was diagnosed when I returned to Canada. Unfortunately it took a while to dignose as I lived in small town Ontario and was only given medication to control tourista until he decided after 8 weeks to send me to larger city to specialist who immediately hospitalized me for two weeks running tests. Also had other problems as immune system was wiped out as I recall.

That was thirty three years ago and you couldn't pay me enough to go back to Mexico.

Hi sunny, Welcome to the board. My IBS started at age 40, following an extremely stressful period in my life. There has been quite a bit of discussion regarding age of onset. Try a search on this subject; you my find the previous posts very helpful. This board is a great place for information and comfort. best of luck and welcome, artist

Mine started when I was 24 after the birth of my last child. That was 3 1/2 years ago. I suspect it started due to a couple of factors. One being the long, difficult labor and two the stress of a toodler and a colicy baby that did not sleep through the night for six weeks.

I was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago, at age 31, but I suspect I've had it for years. I've never been able to eat or drink much dairy, and cut out coffee 10 years ago b/c a doctor at the time diagnosed me with ulcers (but I'm starting to think that it was just ibs all along). I was diagnosed after 4 months of the worst strees I've ever been through.

But do get the colonoscopy to rule out anything more serious. My doc was more suprised than anyone when he found pre-cancerous polyps on somebody my age. One of them, he said, would have killed me before I was 40. And I know I wouldn't have had the colonoscopy until I was 50 or more. As it is, I just have to keep up regular colonoscopies--and figure out a way to stop this ibs cycle.

Mine started at age 16 - That's when I can remember having my first attack. But I think I had smaller attacks before that.

Not altogether sure, but I think early 20's around 21 or 22 is when I noticed I began having difficulty.

I began to notice IBS symptoms ( not that I had a clue what IBS was, at the time) at age 30 when my mother was terminally ill with cancer. I am sure the stress of the situation triggered problems, though looking back I may have occasionally experienced digestive issues as far back as teenage years. That usually only happened if I ate something really rich and ate too fast. Since my mom's illness and subsequent death, IBS has definitely worsened.

Mine started at age 19. I had my first attack after having really shrimp scampi (lots of butter), fried cheese bread, and a huge meal at Red Lobster.

I am 24, still wrapping up some testing to make sure it isn't anything else more serious than IBS. Symptoms started a year ago (D), and up until then I had an iron stomach and could eat ANYTHING! Even the Olean stuff that made everyone else sick! Oh how I long for a big juicy bacon cheese burger!

The diet recommended here helps me out tremendously. Tried out some recipes from Heathers book and they are delicious! Immodium also helps me out when I get D.

Good luck!

I'm still undergoing tests and am not officially diagnosed- the doctor thinks it is IBS with C but wants to be sure. Apparently, as an newborn infant I was on medication for C!! Always had trouble going and had a sensitive stomach since I was very small. Stomach pains and gas problems I remember having occasionally as a child, but became an almost everyday occurrence around age 11 (still bearable though). Definitely the worse has been since age 18 and I went to college- stress related I am sure because summers are less problematic than the school year. I guess I'd have to say mine is increasingly worse as age (and stress) increase.

Was 25 when i was diagnosed, trigered by a very stressful time, although when i was about 5 i used to have to go see my GP for C,and as a teenager i just though i had a "dicky tummy" looking back it was all probably IBS related.Am 30 now,and thanks to the advice in heathers book and the boards,i think i am slowly getting there!

Mine begian about a year and a half ago. That would make it January 2002. I was 15 then. It started as painfull diarrhea about one or twice a month. It just got worse from there, in a two month time I missed 51 days of school.
