I was wondering if anybody from this board would be willing to work with and help me individually overcome Irritable Bowel Syndrome, this way my needs get meet, you can feel better knowing you have made a difference, and I can avoid having to post questions which people find repetetive.

I want to state that I am a hands on learner. This is how I have been as a student. I currently attend college, and the way I learn and have been sucessful in school has been to ask questions, to confirm, to double check, no matter how obvious the answer to somebody is.
This is especially true when I am learning something new, which Irritable Bowel Syndrome and what I need to be doing in terms od diet and lifestyle is.

For example, when I go and read posts on here or other information, about 5 questions instantly come up into my head. I need to ask and get answers to those questions because if I don't I feel I can't continue, it's a roadblock that stoomps my brain.
I hope you understand my perspective and that Irritable Bowel Syndrome is something new and how this is the way I learn new things.
Certain people on here have been extremely helpful and I admit I have not thanked or been as aware with my tone as I should.
I'd like to remind you that I am a young male and as such, especially online, I am not aware of my tone nor I am used to talking with people who are in this age category.
I would like you to take this into consideration.

I must say the advice I have been given on this board, and knowing I have a place where I can ask questions and get answers, on demand support, has really made a huge difference and been of great help, and I would like to ask that a few people on here volunteer to help coach me indivudally.
I simply can't learn by reading solo, I am in sense like socrates, I leanr by asking questions, anything on my brain, people in real life have been annoyed by this, but that is the way I operate, and I don't want this to disqualify from the helpful benefits people on here have given.
I apologize for the inconvience, and would like to ask that a few people indivually so kindly volunteer to work with me, this way we all win here.

I will continue to use the search button, and if I feel a topic has not been discussed and is something which is good to ask on the board instead of indivually I will do so, and I will make a conscious effort to be more courteous with my answers to you guys. I can't explain how necessary it is that I have experienced and knowledgeable people there to help me at this point in time with where I am with Irritable Bowel Syndrome now. I'm sure we can figure it out. Thanks.

I'm assuming from the content of your post that you are the poster previously known as NotADocter, who was the poster previously known as Volatile. If so, it took a lot of courage and determination to post this and I hope you get the help you want. I'm not willing to volunteer for the post, but I do have a few suggestions.

Update your profile to put your email address in it. That way, anyone who does want to help you "off the books" can contact you directly, rather than going through a meet-and-greet with an audience of millions.

I don't remember you saying in any of your previous posts that you have read Heather's book, "The First Year - IBS". I know you say you have to ask questions to learn, but if you're in college I assume you must be able to read textbooks to absorb knowledge. I strongly urge you to get Heather's book and read it like a textbook. It will provide a firm foundation for your understanding of the diet and the larger lifestyle changes you need to make.

If no one from the Boards volunteers to tutor you and you really just can't get the info you need from reading the book, reading the Website, and searching the Boards, try approaching it from the other end. Ask a friend or relative to do the reading with you and help you research your questions.

I occasionally, especially if I have diary, will be c, but the big problem I have is bloating.
It seems no matter what I do, despite going to the gym, being 15 pounds lighter than I should be, I look like a fat out of shape person carrying a ballon in his gut, and it driving me up the wazoo.

What is more frustrating is how some weeks, two weeks ago, the bloating seems to be under control, and the weeks like this, my stomach is extremely bloated.
Two weeks ago I had cake and cheesecake, this week I had a cookie and veggie cheese which had caesien, so you see my body despite having some dairy two weeks ago is worse this week.

I get bloated when I run, when I sweat, my body is constantly flucating in terms of shape and appearnace between looking fit as I should for all the exercise and looking like a person who never gets off his feet.
I really need help stopping the bloating, I have tried being off alcohol, fatty foods, red meat, having peppermint tea, taking fiber, and all have given me the same inconsistent on and off bloating I have experienced before.

It's so bad today, that I am wearing, and have to in the summer, a long sleeve shirt when I should be wearing a short sleeve one. I do this because I am so bloated, it makes my arms really thin, I look fat and weak, which for somebody who exercises like I do is so embarassing.

A big problem with my bloating is, not only does my stomach look fatter when I am bloated but my muscles, particularly the arms, are smaller.
It basically is as if when I get bloated my body is draining all the muscle from my arms, leaving them small and barren, and putting it into the stomach as fat, which tranforms me from being strong and lean to fat and scrawny.
Does anybody else have this issue in the way I do?

I would like to read that book, but for the next month I am too busy between work and school. When I get done with all that I am too tired, my brain is fried to concentrate, but in a month once I get done I will be able to at that time have more time to focus on this, but for now it is best I discuss this at a conversation level with people. Do you understand where I am coming from, and thanks for your kindness.

I am sure it just seems like your arms are smaller. When I bloat it seems like my butt and thighs got huge! I gotta tell you be prepared to not get real far with bloating. It is almost incurable really. Please try to lower your goals to being not bloated most of the time. Really I don't want you to be too disappointed. Bloating is just that hard. I get bloated in streaks. I will be fighting it day after day for weeks and then feel pretty darn good for some weeks. Right now luckily I am in a good streak and hope it continues. But eventually I will get bloated again and probably for no fault of my own or seemingly no reason. YET it can be helped so much by just sticking to the diet, taking SFS and getting the gut to be happy. It cannot be helped by just focusing on bloating. As I said before it is not an entity in itself really. Drink fennel tea, take SFS and stay on the diet, avoiding all triggers, and you will see results with bloaitng as well as overall gut happiness.

"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

If you were asking someone to tutor you for a course, they would expect that you'd have read the text book. I hope this doesn't come accross as rude because I really don't mean it to, it's just that if you don't have *time* to read the book (which, btw, is on this website in almost complete entirity) then you really don't have time to have someone explain everything to you. I mean, if you want someone to just ask 'is this ok? is this ok?' to, that's going to take much longer than just reading the stuff.

A 'tutor' would be useful to clear up anything you're confused about, offer advice and share experiences, but frankly I don't think it's going to be much help unless you devote the time to do some reading first. I know that you said you're a 'hands on learner', and there's nothing wrong with that - asking questions is a great way to learn. But just as in a course, it can't REPLACE doing the reading (just ask any frustrated prof )

I must be in a particularly giving mood today or something, because despite the fact that you have been very rude to me in the past on this website I'd be willing to help you out over email. However not unless you're willing to do some reading first Let me know if you're interested.

Read the book in the bathroom, that is what I do. When I am dying on the loo.. i reach out for my IBS book, and it not only helps me with my symptoms at the time, I learn alot. The bathroom is my throne. Just an idea. ??

That makes it sound hopeless for me. I did some reading tonight, and it sounds really bad. I have been treated in the past for anxiety with antidepressant and other alike medications, and currently am on medication, and after reading about Irritable Bowel Sydrome by a different author tonight, I feel awful.
The author basically made it out like Irritable Bowel Syndrome is caused by anixety and stress, and now I'm lose.
I don't know if I have anxiety or stress, to what extent this has caused Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but I am so tired of people saying it's all in my head.
I don't appear stressed, when I am laughing and having fun and not worrying, I still am bloated.
This is awful, I am just sick and tired of being bloated. I have tried to diet, I have a log of what I have eaten for the past 60 days, and nothing changes.
I feel doomed, and it's ruining me.
Has anybody heard of this, http://www.drdahlman.com/, is his program any good?
I have been considering paying the hundreads of dollars because he guareentees results and gives individual attention. I'm grasping, I need something to get rid of the bloating, I am tired of looking this way.

Dr. Dahlman has come up on the Boards before. Please search on this: "dahlman" (no quotes) across all forums and with no time limit.

My own advice would be that before you spend lots of money, you buckle down and try all the suggestions people on these Boards have made as a unified program - 100% for at least 3 months. As far as I can remember, here's what your program should look like:

- Heather's diet
- an SFS
- regular exercise (take a walk, go for a swim, whatever - every day)
- stress reduction (yoga, yoga, yoga)
- lots and lots of fennel tea (preferably as hot as you can stand it)

As for other's people books, I believe you have to choose your guru. Mixing and matching doesn't work.

Last but not by any means least, it is NOT all in your head. Any doctor who says IBS is strictly mental is, to put it kindly, old-fashioned. If you have IBS and you go through your entire life with not one moment of stress or anxiety, you'll still have symptoms. However, stress and anxiety can make things worse, so having a means to ease them is very valuable (yoga, yoga, yoga).

I checked out Dr. Dahlman from another ibs board. His program is expensive and even though he "guarantees" his results, he has some pretty big loopholes to get out of refunding your money.

1. If he "feels" you aren't following his diet
2. If you refuse to do any additional testing he wants
3. If he "feels" you aren't "embracing" his program

Doesn't look like you'll get any $ back.
